Club Anniversaries

Considering the volitility of the Internet (and the assistance of hackers making it that way), for a club to survive to its first anniversary is a milestone deserving recognition, for a club to make it to two years is...well! So, this newsletter we recognize all clubs which have survived to celebrate the surpassing of their founding date in the month of May because they did. Clubs marked smile are celebrating a second year anniversary--WOW!.

Club/Member News

Club/Group Successes

RPG Founder's Club did a major update to their site at http://www.theddk.com/rpg-founders-club/index.html. We joined more Web Rings, added banners to advertise all the RPG Founders in the club, improved all the pages. We also created a listing for each RPG Club that is a member. The listings show the stats of each club, so people can browse and find a RPG Club which is right for them. Our membership went up by 30 people in a two day period since the site was updated as well as RPG members have reported more activity in their clubs.

The RPG Founder's Club is in Yahoo! Clubs category of Founder Clubs and is for founders and owners of clubs or groups based on role playing grames. It is represented in CFC by Damsel_in_DDK.

Scottcleghorn tells us that his club, The Southern Republic is just 4 months old this month, and it has 230 members already! He started a weekly club chat about 6 weeks ago.

ACADEMIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Its time for me to brag! My daughter has really given her Dad and I something to be proud about these days. Her recent school scores shows she has brought her math grades and English skills up significantly. And she's doing it all by herself! Bravo, Bunny-kid!

Miss_smurfette_30 is proud to announce that she is graduating from Grad School with her teaching credentials!! Way to go Smurfi!

Miss_Smurfette_30 is founder of Hot Chocolate with Marshmellows (Club) and Smurfette's Flirting Club (Club).

We would like to wish Sharra32 a very Happy Birthday! Sharra celebrated her 35th birthday on May 8th. Although neither of her three clubs The Sunflower Cafe, The Crafty Corner, and The Whatever2 nor her two groups Smart_Cooking and UncleBs_Kitchen have anything to do with cats as far as we can tell, Sharra has two and it is their birthdays too. So she would like to wish them a happy birthday also!

A Very Happy Birthday also goes out to Angie (Freedomdeep), who celebrates her birthday on May 11th. FreedomDeep is founder in two Yahoo! clubs: Sleepless In Sacramento and Got Stamps?.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Randy (tuskor51) sent this bit to me, and I had to laugh at the last bit. These are his words:

"Well, I guess you could tell folks that I am finally getting my act together; got new fishies, a new bicycle, the old car has a new cooling system in it, I have new glasses, and after three years the wife STILL thinks I am the cutest guy in the world."

If you don't know about Randy's club Tuskor's Hawg Waller, you haven't been to CFC recently.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

No, this is not a club Anniversary, but a real one! Mr. & Mrs. Sharonlower celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on May 1st. Now there is a success! Congratulations to both of you.

At this point, I draw the line. Sharonlower has just too many clubs to name them all, so I'll just mention one or two: Sharon's Korner and Kool Websites.

SPECIAL THANKS

I would personally like to send a warm thanks to AngelPie_Mouse. I have been searching for Winnie-the-Pooh playing cards, and without me really knowing, she found some and mailed them up to me along with a whole bunch of Pooh greeting cards that she made especially for me!

Thanks very much!
Mistybunny

Special Bulletin

Our member nationalconvention of Canadian Moms Alive has asked us to post this special bulletin.

At 5 p.m. approximately on Friday, May 4, 2001, 5-year-old Jessica Koopmans went missing from her home in North Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. She is 4 feet tall, 40 pounds, with shoulder length brown hair, blue eyes, and freckles. She was last seen wearing a white tank top, blue jean shorts, and pink sandals. If you have any information or if you see Jessica, please contact the Lethbridge City Police at 1-403-328-4444. For more information, follow the articles in The Lethbridge Herald. (Do not use the toll-free number to Crime Stoppers in the article as it does not connect as indicated in the US.)

This story is no hoax and has been independently confirmed through several sources:

  • Urban Legends Reference Pages
or connect through Urban Legends > Religion > Missing and Sick Children > Koopmans [http://www.snopes2.com/inboxer/children/koopmans.htm for this article; http://www.snopes2.com to investigate Urban Legends et al.]
  • National Center for Missing or Exploited Children (US)
Toll-Free Number 1-800-The-Lost. Jessica Koopmans is not on their registry because Canadian missing children are reported to other authorities. However, the center via telephone did confirm that they are aware of her status and cooperating with the Canadian authorities. [http://www.ncmec.org for US Missing and Exploited Children]

Software and Technical Review

HTML Lesson Two: Lists
by AngelPie_Mouse

Now that you understand the concept of switch on/switch off, we will begin with some simple tag command definitions which might be useful in your moderators message. This week, we look at List commands.

Most browsers will render a list as indented from the body of the text although it is best not to depend on this function being performed in all cases. Lists can, however, be nested (one within another) to demonstrate subordinate relationships of information. There are several ways of perferming lists in HTML. The three most popular are unordered <ul>, ordered <ol>, and definition <dl>. The items in both the ordered and unordered list begin with the tag command <li> (we will discuss definition lists in the next issue of this newsletter).

Unordered List <ul>.

The unordered list is designated as unordered because the information it presents is bulletted rather than numbered or presented with a heirarchial value.

Code Example:
<ul>
<li> Club Founders' Club </li>
<li> Shelties </li>
<li> Guiding On The Go </li>
<li> CFC_Experimental (Group) </li>
</ul>

Code Renders:

  • Club Founders' Club
  • Shelties
  • Guiding On The Go
  • CFC_Experimental (Group)

A heirarchy of the data may be created which uses type options to specify the kind of bullet to be used. The options are: TYPE=disc|circle|square and they default in order presented here.

Code Example:
<ul>
<li> CFC Founders <ul>
<li> AngelPie_Mouse </li>
<li> ArrylT </li>
<li> Mistybunny <ul>
<li> Guiding On The Go </li></ul></li>
<li> NOWAYWINS <ul>
<li> Shelties </li>
<li> CFC_Experimental </li></ul></li></ul>
<li> CFC_Experimental Moderators <ul>

Code Renders:

  • CFC Founders
    • AngelPie_Mouse
    • ArrylT
    • Mistybunny
      • Guiding On The Go
    • NOWAYWINS
      • Shelties
      • CFC_Experimental
  • CFC_Experimental Moderators

You may also specify the type of bullet for variation as a matter of choice. The command structure would thus read: <ul type=disc> for example.

Ordered List <ol>.

The ordered list is designated as ordered because the information it presents is numbered or presented with a value establishing a heirachy of importance. The default is a numeric value.

Code Example:
<ol>
<li> Club Founders' Club </li>
<li> Shelties </li>
<li> Guiding On The Go </li>
<li> CFC_Experimental (Group) </li>
</ol>

Code Renders:

  1. Club Founders' Club
  2. Shelties
  3. Guiding On The Go
  4. CFC_Experimental (Group)

A heirarchy of the data may be created which uses type options to specify the value to be assigned. The options are: TYPE=1|A|a|I|i , however you must specify the type.

Code Example:
<ol type=I>
<li> Clubs<ol type=A>
<li> CFC Founders <ol type=1>
<li> AngelPie_Mouse<ol type=a>
<li> Homepage</li>
<li> Club Records</li>
<li> Featured Clubs/Groups</li>
<li> Technical Correspondence</li>
<li> Newsletter<ol type=i>
<li> Articles</li>
<li> Editing</li>
<li> Art</li>
</ol></li>
</ol></li>
<li> ArrylT <ol type=a>
<li> Contests</li>
<li> Techical Correspondence</li>
<li> Featured Club Selection</li>
</ol></li>
<li> Mistybunny <ol type=a>
<li> Hospitality</li>
<li> Calendar</li>
<li> Newsletter Personals</li>
<li> Club/Group Anniversaries</li>
</ol></li>
<li> NOWAYWINS <ol type=a>
<li> Technical Correspondence</li>
<li> Newsletter Research</li>
</ol></li>
</ol></li>
</ol><br>
<li> Groups<ol type=A>
<li> CFC_Experimental Moderators<ol type=I>
</ol>

Code Renders:

  1. Clubs
    1. CFC Founders
      1. AngelPie_Mouse
        1. Homepage
        2. Club Records
        3. Featured Clubs/Groups
        4. Technical Correspondence
        5. Newsletter
          1. Articles
          2. Editing
          3. Art
      2. ArrylT
        1. Contests
        2. Techical Correspondence
        3. Featured Club Selection
      3. Mistybunny
        1. Hospitality
        2. Calendar
        3. Newsletter Personals
        4. Club/Group Anniversaries
      4. NOWAYWINS
        1. Technical Correspondence
        2. Newsletter Research

  2. Groups
    1. CFC_Experimental Moderators

As you can see, it is possible to render a fairly complex list similar to an academic outline for online viewing by using these very simple tag commands. For the most part, however, you will probably not require all of the type designations they allow. Go ahead, try them out for yourself.

Next month, definition list.

A Founders' Tip

Hello, fellow founders:

Today, I will talk about the benefits of having a co-founder (moderator). Ahhh, I can hear some of you now: "I don't want to share" or "I don't want to risk losing my club." I am talking about a co-founder (moderator) in name only. We use it in CFC and in my own club. In fact, a lot of you use this in your own clubs. Yet, many have yet to get the concept, many do not use its full benefits, and there are some real pluses to using a dummy ID, no matter if you have real co-founders (moderators) or not.

First, a dummy ID gives you a second line of protection against hackers and other losses of your main ID. Remember: with a single founder (owner) listed, if the main ID goes, you lose the status of owner and the tools that go with it or at least the ability to regain some control in groups and the club altogether in clubs. Second, it provides you with a more anonymous ID behind which it may be you or it may be one of your real co-founders. That means, if you have to scold someone for a post, it is not as likely to be taken as a personal attack. With a single founder (owner), it is just the psychology of the thing--the official word, not you personally. Third, the ID can register for a mailbox that you can share with co-founders (moderators) so that e-mail to your club goes to a common place and can be answered by any founder (owner or moderator). For Unlisted clubs (groups), an address to receive e-mail from people who may have heard of your club or group by word-of-mouth gives you an opportunity to talk to them without commitment, and having the clubs(groups) name as part of the email address will help clairify which club mail came from. Fourth, the ID can register for a homepage address that has the club (group) name on it and, if you choose to share the password, that all of the club (group) founders (moderators) can access for online file storage as well as other homepage uses. Fifth, you can use the ID to create other clubs such as an unlisted one where you and your real co-founders (moderators) can meet to discuss member problems, post info about club (group) business, share real life addresses and personal schedules without making them public, and store data that you want to share in common so that all founders (moderators) have access to it.

Now that I've sold you on the idea, let's go through the creation process.

Your first step is to create a new profile using the name of your club or group. In CFC, we have two such names. One is "ClubFoundersClub," created for the sake of the homepage and memberships in other founder clubs and only accessed by our webmaster. Another is "CFC_Founders," which is used for most of the above functions and shared commonly by all four of the founders of CFC. Our greeting cards and anniversary notes are mailed from CFC_Founders, many of your inquiries on technical problems are handled by someone behind this ID, etc. It's not meant to confuse you. Rather, it is meant to speed up the response time in handling e-mail because the first one into the mailbox each day can take care of a question.

Step two is to fill out its profile with your club(group) logo and info. It may be an anonymous ID, but it does have a background: your club(group) mission, what you are about.

Step three, have the ID join your club. Yep, it is now just like anyone else. It can join/subscribe to your club (group) or other clubs and groups-- particularly cool for those in your same category because it becomes a form of advertisement as well as being an anonymous observer. It can create clubs and groups. In all respects, it is just another you. So, get it a mailbox and a homepage.

Step four, promote the ID to founder (moderator) status. After it joins (subscribes), switch your IDs to your primary one and promote it. Just like that.

Step five, share the ID with your co-founders (moderators), if you have them. Use its e-mail address to sign official club business.

If you have any questions about the ideas presented above, please feel free to contact AngelPie_Mouse, Mistybunny, or NOWAYWINS.

NOWAYWINS

As well as being co-founder of Yahoo! Club Founders' Club, NOWAYWINS is owner/moderator of CFC_Experimental, co-founder in Shelties (Club) moderator in Shelties_Club (Group), and....more!
