Editorial

"We wish you a Merry Christmas;
we wish you a Merry Christmas;
we wish you a Merry Christmas;
and a Happy New Year.
Glad tidings we bring

where ever you are;
glad tidings at Christmas
and a Happy New Year."

Okay, it's Christmas but not everyone wants to do a Christmas e-greeting exchange. And, maybe you are getting a late start on this idea of jazzing up your club for the holiday. What can you do using the resources you have right here before you? We've put together a few ideas you can try.

Idea #1. Ask Santa (on the message board) ...
If you could climb up on Santa's lap today and ask for any one thing for yourself for Christmas and know that you would get it, what would that gift be and why? The point of this activity is to use imagination and for you and your members to get to know each other a little better. Too, you can play a variation on it as a game similar to "I was packing my grandfather's trunk" with the idea that each member in turn has to ask for something beginning with a different letter of the alphabet.

Idea #2. Under the Christmas Tree (on the message board and photo album)
Set up photo albums called Christmas Tree and invite members to send virtual gifts to any other member they wish to and as many as they would like by uploading photos of objects and naming the picture as a gift tag. Delivery of said present can be announced on the message board.

Idea #3. Christmas Carol (on the message board)
Celebrate the twelve days of Christmas by posting the lyrics of one well-known Christmas carol on the message board each day. It's funny how memory works but the words remind one of the tune and pretty soon you'll be sharing the Christmas spirit with everyone in your club.

Idea #4. Trimming the Tree (on your club webpage and photo album)
Only try this if you have a little graphic talent and a club website. Create and upload to your club website a series of pictures that pieced together create a huge Christmas tree using the standard screen width of 800x600. You might want to put an ornament on the top of the tree for yourself or your club, but otherwise leave the branches blank. Next, create a photo album for Christmas Ornaments and invite members to supply a 50x50-pixel or less decorations for the tree, giving them the URL so they can see it. Cut and paste the ornaments to the tree as they are offered.

Idea #5. Traditions (on your message board)
As we demonstrated at Thanksgiving here in CFC, traditions surrounding the holidays can differ regionally and by heritage. This is even more true for Christmas than for any other holiday. So, invite members to tell a story about a typical Christmas at their house or the childhood memory of one special Christmas. You may be surprised by the poignancy and the humor.

Idea #6. Christmas Open House (in chat)
Have no plans yourself for Christmas Day? How about opening your club chat and leaving it open all day on Christmas Day as an Open House. You can set an away message to have people play a sound to alert you when someone enters if you need to step away. Members can drop in and say "hello," share info on what Santa brought them, share a cyber egg-nog and complain about the family. They can also bring friends and family members to this terrific club of yours, perhaps interesting them in joining.

What are we doing in CFC? See the Chat Schedule below.

Scheduled Chat

Everyone bring cookies and pastry. I'll bring the punch bowl full of egg-nog and another with something more punch-like, eh--cyber, of course. We'll make it a party!

Our Next Chat Session will be Friday December 15th at 9:30 pm EST when Yahoo! Club Founders' Club will celebrate Christmas with an old-fashioned chat session.

Thread Digest

The term "thread" comes from the days of EBBs and Usenet/Newsnet. It refers to a series of posts, which may or may not be on topic but begin with the same subject heading. "Re:" on our message board can either be taken as "regarding" or "replying to," for example. Pointing to the beginning of a thread, you can sometimes gleen important bits of discussion pro and con on an issue, allowing you to make a more informed decision. We use the term a little more loosely in Yahoo! clubs, where a response can often be as much off topic as on.

The main concern of this digest is to point to beginnings of threads or significant entries concerning them or important postings that you might want to visit again. We do not bring you the entire post--a complete repost would take far too much space. However, we do offer the entry number, the subject line, name of member posting, date, some overview of the content, and a list of related posts (if any) over a 30 day period (+/-) in the listing below.

    Note: sometimes the information that others are experiencing the same difficulty you are in performing a routine Yahoo! function helps. An important part of networking in clubs such as CFC is that it can offer that sort of validation. Also, note: there is a strong connection in club function failure and Yahoo! activity in ammending programming.
