This course is intended for students in fields outside of mathematics intended to assist them in thinking about data and the statistical methods used to understand it. It is an elementary but serious introduction to modern statistics that should help the student gain insight in statistical concepts and to think about the background of data, the design of the study that produced the data, and the possible effects of outlying observations on statistical conclusions. Students with a firm understanding of the concepts in this course are well prepared to learn more advanced methods. The course includes an overview of probability followed by both descriptive and statistical inference, including hypotheis testing and confidence intervals of various population parameters. Prerequisites : MAT 111 or two years of high-school mathematics.
