MAT 261 : Introduction to Abstract Algebra

The goal of this course is to enable the student to read, critique, construct, and write mathematial proofs in preparation for upper-level mathematics courses. For many students, MAT 261 may be the first exposure to the abstract nature of "pure" mathematics. Topics include logic, basic set theory, relations, functions, sequences, limits, cardinality, and algebraic and geometric structures. MAT 261 is required for all mathematics-statistics majors. Students considering a mathematics major are strongly advised to take this course in the fall semester of their sophmore year. Prerequisite : A grade of C or better in MAT 127 or permission. Credits 3.
