MAT 126 : Calculus I

Calculus is basically the study of motion and change and is the discipline on which all following "continuous" mathematical courses are built. The University of Maine offers 3 one-semester courses in calculus, MAT 126, MAT 127, and MAT 228, which are normally taken by students of mathematics, engineering, and the physical sciences. The first two calculus courses provide a solid introduction to one-variable calculus, and MAT 228 covers multlivariable calculus.
Topics in MAT 126 include the differential calculus of the algebraic, trigonometric, exponential, and logarithmic functions, concluding with the definite integral and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Also included are the usual related rate and optimization problems. The approach is intuitive and geometric with emphasis on understanding the basic concepts of function, limit, derivative, and integral. Prerequisite : A grade of C or better in MAT 122, or adequate performance on a qualifying examination.
