A study of algebraic systems composed of nonempty sets with binary operations defined on them, and characterized by specific axiom systems. MAT 463 begins with a study of set theory, functions, and operations and continues with topics selected from group theory and abstract linear algebra. MAT 464 is recommended for those majors intending to go on to graduate school in mathematics. MAT 464 is a continuation of MAT 463 and includes an introduction to the theory of rings and fields. Prerequisite MAT 261 and MAT 262, or permisison.
