Being a small gallery of works
The former opening remarks are here. While comments on the
details
of the scanning and so forth are appropriate, I need the intro space for something else right
now.
The Geocities popup is such a drag for some people that I get complaints about it. All the time. I
never get pop-ups on either of my main browsers--doesn't recognize them--but I know it's a
problem for other people. While the "Geoguide" banner eliminates most pop-ups, apparently
something about this page inspires continual popup aggravation despite the annoying
presence of the banner.
I have placed thumbnail images of the most recent additions on the bottom of this page, and
thumbnails of
all the portfolio pieces on this page. Thus, if you
have the patience to wait for them all to load, you can get a glimpse at them all, clicking on the
image only if you want to see greater detail. That should limit the number of times that the popup
jumps on your screen. If, for you, the banner is doing its job of replacing pop-ups, the text part of
the page still loads quickly and has hyperlinks to the large images. You don't have to wait for the
thumbnails to load if you don't want to.
This is an intermediate reorganization of the portfolio; I'm planning on breaking it down into art
styles--but that's a story for another day. If something that you had seen here in the past is gone,
don't worry. The description is gone, but the images are here. Also, you
might be interested in Gallery 3, which contains articles on making
particular art works, some of which are not represented here.
I hope you enjoy the following pieces. I enjoyed making them all.
-
AoA for Leif Greyfox
Created in
December 1994. Gouache and ink on paper. Detail of a
work sized 9x12 inches, with an image area of
6.25x9.75 inches. Scanned from color copy. This is
the only early Scandinavian work I've done on paper;
shortly after this, I switched to making Runic works
in clay or stone.
-
Order of the Pearl for Morvan Corbet de la
Flamme
Created in March 1995. Gouache
and
ink on paper. Complete image of a work sized 11x14
inches, with the image sized 8x10 5/16 inches.
Scanned from the original. Based upon Italian troemp
l'oeil, with the sources for the images divided
among several works. This was made as part of a
project to assist the scribes of Atlantia, and I sure
would love to deliver it to the owner--if only I knew
where the owner is!
-
Psalter of St. Louis for MagForce 7,
Inc.
Created May 1995. Gouache and
ink on paper. Paper size of 9X12, with image area of
~7X8 inches. Scanned from original. Based on the
abovementioned French work of the 13th century.
-
AoA for Tereza di Leone
Created in
July 1995. Gouache and ink on paper. Complete image
of a work originally sized 9X12 inches, with image
area of ~7X10 inches. Scanned from color copy.
Whitevine initial with humanist calligraphy; I did
the calligraphy in extremely dim natural light.
The lettering turned out surprisingly well, but my
eyes were hurting when it was over! Based on a 15th
century Italian style more than a particular
work.
-
AoA for Mirhi Deniz-Yetim
Created
December 1995. Gouache and ink on paper. Paper sized
9X12, with image area of 7X9 inches.
Scanned from color copy. Border from a 15th century
Koran, with an English alphabet designed to imitate
Arabic script.
-
Award of the Purple Fret for Munenori
Created February 1996. Gouache and ink on dyed paper.
Original work sized 12x9 inches, with image size of
9X7 inches. Scanned from color copy. Based on a 16th
century Japanese painting and a 15th century Japanese
woodcut, with an English alphabet meant to imitate a
generic Asian hand (if such a thing could be said to
exist).
-
AoA for Aibhilin ni Dhomnaill
Created May 1996. Gouache and ink on paper. Original
work sized 12X9 with the image occupying 8 7/8X7
inches. Scanned from color copy. Based on the book of
Kells and the Book of Durrow.
-
Order of the Chivalry for Gunther von
Brandenburg
Created September 1996.
Gouache, gold leaf, aluminum leaf, ink on paper.
Paper size of 10x14 with image size of ~8X10.5
inches. Scanned from color copy. A much better
example of my rather idiosyncratic bastarda. Based on
Flemish work of the late 15th century. This was the
second version; the initial work, more complicated,
had an out-of-body experience with a cup of coffee.
-
Order of the Willow for Merit Rose
Created first week of January, 1997. Gouache and ink
on paper. Paper size of 11X14 with the actual paining
and calligraphy occupying 6.5X10.25 inches. Scanned
from a color copy. Flemish troemp l'oeil, based on a
breviary of the last quarter of the 15th century.
Merit is a cook; the flora in the border consists of
various spices and herbs in use during the Middle
Ages.
-
Latin Recipe
Created March 1997.
Gouache and ink on papyrus. Papyrus size of 8.5X11,
with the calligraphy occupying 6.5X9.25 inches.
Scanned from the original. A practice piece done at a
demo--my first time working with papyrus. It is VERY
different from paper, and I learned a few interesting
lessons, like "metal nibs on papyrus make good
calligraphy impossible" and "it is easier to write on
the side of the papyrus that lies horizontal rather
than the vertical side." One of Apicus's recipes,
this gives directions for cooking a chicken.
-
Order of the Grove for the Jararvellir Middle
Eastern Dance Guild
Created July 1997. Gouache, glair, composition leaf,
ink on paper. Paper=11X14 inches, image=9X11 inches
(approximate). Scanned from color copy. Based on a
Persian Koran of the 16th century, with the
artificial Arabic hand.
-
Award of the Purple Fret for Donato and
Aeyesha
Created October 1997. Gouache, glair, and ink on
paper. Paper size of 11X8.5 inches and image size of
~7.75X6.5 inches. Scanned from color copy. Based on
the Rohan Hours, French, 15th Century.
-
AoA for Lysette Cordon
Created November 1997. Gouache, glair, gold leaf, ink
on paper. Paper size 8x10 inches, with an image of
5.25X7.25 inches. Scanned from color copy. Based on
the Hours of Catherine of Cleves.
-
Study for an award for Giles Devon
Created November 1997. Gouache,
ink on paper. Paper size of 8.5x11. Scanned from the
original. Based on an engraving--Japanese, 16th century.
I made this first ink painting as a practice, to be
sure I got it right for Giles.
-
Order of the Willow for Gwenhwyvar
Nocturnal
Worked over the course of
several years; calligraphy, drawing, partial
illumination started July 1995, final work done in
November 1997. Gouache, gold leaf, ink. Gold leaf
laid by Peter the Goldsmith and red/blue colors laid
for initials by Magdelena von der Plesse. I do not
recall the actual size, but it was the largest paper
I ever used, with the image contained in a space no
larger than 10X13. Scanned from color copy. Items
placed in the border were chosen for personal meaning
rather than historical accuracy; few examples of
trompe l'oeil borders contain gems AND flora. Based
on the Franco-Flemish style.
-
Order of the Grove for House Blue
Rose
Worked over the course of time;
calligraphy and borders drawn in January, 1996, final
work done December 1997. Gouache, glair, gold leaf,
ink on paper. Paper size unknown, image size
approximately 13x8 inches. Scanned from color copy.
Another Flemish-type trompe l'oeil border; while
flora and gems are rarely mixed, there are examples
of gems with flowers painted as gems. Thus, the
heraldic roses in this piece were painted as if they
were gems. Based on late 15th century Flemish
work.
-
ABC-Pater Noster Page
Created May 1998. Gouache, glair, gold,
ink on paper. Paper size of 8.25x11.25. Scanned from the
original. Based on Dutch work of the first half of the 15th century.
This was a gift that did double duty as an A&S project; extensive
documentation and close-up scans of portions can be
found by clicking here.
- AoA for Mizumori Omitu
Created September 1998. Paper size of 8.5x11 inches. Scanned from original. Sumi-e ink on
paper. A Sumi-e orchid and the "generic Oriental" hand.
- Order of the Crwth for Cybele of Rowangrove
Created September 1998. Paper size of 8.5x11 inches. Scanned from original.
Acrylic gold, gouache, ink on paper. Yet another from the Hours of Catherine of Cleves;
it isn't that I always do Cleves, it just seems to be the one I have time to get online!
- Award of the Purple Fret for Frederic
Created
December 1998. Gesso, gold leaf, gouache, ink on pergamenta. Pergamenta sized 8x10 inches,
image area ~5.5x6.25 inches. Scanned from original. There is a very extensive description of its
creation in Gallery 3.
- Award of the Purple Fret for Michael of Ravenslake
Begun April 1998, completed December 1998, with some touch-up March 99. On
100% cotton paper, ~14.5x10 inches, with the image ~12.5x7 inches. Gouache, handmade paints,
ink, glue size, gold leaf, aluminum leaf. Based on illuminated grants of arms from the Tudor era.
Scanned from a color copy. Further information on the creation of this piece can be found here.
- Map of the Midlands
Created January 1999. Paper sized 11x14. Gouache, ink on bristol board. This was a fun little
project, making a map of the land covered by particular local chapters of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. I studied a lot of old
maps to get ideas, but the need for absolute clarity made it hard to include a lot of detail. Scanned
from original. Now that it has served its purpose and been returned to me, I may add some
landscape detail and other such things as were on period maps.
- Award of Arms for Miguel de Montoya el Artista
Created March 1999. Paper sized 9x12, with image sized ~6.75x8.5 inches. Gouache,
ink, handmade paints, gold leaf, gesso on opaline vellum. Scanned from original. Further information on the creation can be found in Gallery 3, below.
- Prayer Book After the Dutch
Finished Sept. 1999. Scanned from original. Information on the materials, et cetera, is included in the link above.
- Order of the Dragon's Heart for Caldor Quinncane.
Created Sept-Oct 1999. Paper sized 9x12, with image sized ~6.75x8.5 inches. Gouache,
ink, handmade paints on lana laid paper. Scanned from original. Further information can be found in Gallery 3, below.
- Order of the Laurel for Hal Raeburn
Created December 1999. Paper sized 14x11", with image sized ~11x8". Gouache,
ink, handmade paints, gold leaf, malt on vellum. Scanned from original. Based primarily on a 16th c. document, with some details from 16th c. woodwork. Closeups of each side are here and here.
