March 18: Michael Johnson 19.71 in South Africa
PIETERSBURG, South Africa - Double world record holder Michael Johnson blazed to a stunning 19.71-second 200 meters Saturday in the Engen Summer Series Grand Prix meet.

Johnson, making his first competitive appearance of this Olympic year, made an emphatic statement about his chances of repeating the 200-meter and 400-meter double in Sydney which he achieved in the 1996 games in Atlanta.

His altitude-aided time was the fourth-best ever posted - he has bettered it twice and Frank Fredericks of Namibia clocked 19.68 in the wake of Johnson's 1996 world record of 19.32.

"My time shows I am on track, and the training I am doing is right," Johnson said. "Now I am looking forward to Sydney, and I'll go out there and just do my best."

March 12: Blazing times in Arkansas
Kim Collins and Shawn Crawford have been tearing up the brand new track in Fayetteville at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Collins of Texas Christian started the fun by tying Jon Drummond's track record of 6.53 seconds in the 60m prelims. The 60m final was not as fast as the prelims but hurdler/sprinter Terrance Trammell of South Carolina took the final over Collins in 6.54 seconds. Collins came home in 6.61.

Clemson's Shawn Crawford took to the track in the 200m prelims and blistered a World leading time of 20.33, just .01 of the American record of 20.32 held by Kevin Little and Rohsaan Griffin. In the final, it was John Capel of Florida and Crawford running one of the fastest indoor 200's ever, both crossing the line in 20.26 seconds. After a photo finish, Crawford was the victor, setting a new American and NCAA record. Capel was second and will have his hands full defending his outdoor 200m championship in Durham in May. Capel won the 1999 outdoor's in 19.87 seconds. Collins was third in the 200 with a time of 20.52.

March 6: Championship Results
I encourage everyone to check out this pages' newest addition, Championship Results. I have compiled championship results, indoors and outdoors from 1983-2000. So far, I have event such as NCAA, US, Canadian, World and European championships. I'll be adding more as time permits. Currently, there is 27 championships listed.

The next two championships coming up are the NCAA Indoors in a week and the NCAA Outdoors at the end of May.
March 4: Jason Gardener finishes indoor season 12 and 0
British No. 1 Jason Gardener couldn't break his European 60 meters record in Sunday's CGU International meet in Glasgow. However, seven days after being crowned European champion, Gardener successfully maintained his season's unbeaten record.

Gardener raced to a runaway win in 6.57 seconds as the finale to an extraordinary indoor season.

"I've beaten Ato Boldon and Bruny Surin - both world-class sprinters. I have been called the "Bath Bullet" in the past, Now it would be great to be undisputed No. 1 in this country and become the "British Bullet."

And with the track season rapidly approaching, the 24-year-old has progressed magnificently through the ranks since his days as a world class junior. He added: "Who knows, maybe later in the year I will become the "Olympic Bullet."

Beforehand Gardener boasted he would attack the European record of 6.46 he achieved when winning a World bronze medal on the same weekend a year ago in Maebashi but he was unable to improve on that
performance.

In his 12th race in 35 days it proved to be Gardener's slowest on his whirlwind schedule. Gardener, who still roared through the field in the final stages of his race, said: "It was important to win not only for myself but for the great crowd and support I've had.

"My confidence is much better than it was 12 months ago because I've been picking off big names - and it gives you a good feeling.

"I wanted to go through the whole of the indoor season undefeated and I have done that."
March 4: 60m and 200m Finals at US Indoor Championships
Jon Drummond and Chris Chandler won the men's sprint events Saturday at the US Indoor Championships in Atlanta.

1993 60m Champion Jon Drummond won the 60m in a PB time of 6.46, it was the third time he has equaled the time. Drummond had a mediocre start but caught Tim Harden at the line to win his second championship. Two time defending champion Harden regained his form of 98 and 99 by finishing second in 6.48, as he is now the fifth man of 2000 to go sub 6.5. Greg Saddler took third, followed by Bryan Howard and Mike Marsh. Drummond and Harden won the semi-finals in 6.5 and 6.58 resp.

"I through execution out the window and just went for the win. The main thing is I'm injury free and my health is optimal. You can't be mad if you run 6.46 twice in one season. I wanted to come in here and run real fast just for the Jon Drummond. The $50,000 would have been nice, but that's OK." - Drummond

University of Nebraska's Chris Chandler won his first US title by winning the 200m dash in 20.86 seconds. Chandler was also the Big 12 60/200 Champion. Brian Lewis was second in 20.88, followed by Kevin Braunskill.

"Most of the time I try to get out faster, but I came out here just for experience. I have NCAAs next week and this was my first time running on a banked track. Yesterday it was hard. I was stumbling all over the place. But, I made it to the finals and I did try to adjust today." -Chandler

March 1: Surin becomes an ambassador for the 2001 Francaphone Games
The Organizing Committee is proud to announce that Bruny Surin has joined the IV Games of La Francophonie as a special events promoter. The Canadian sprinter will be lending his name and face to several promotional campaigns.

Bruny Surin is having one of his best seasons, carrying off the Best Athlete award in the senior category at the seventh Gala Athlétas this past November.

"I am very happy to lend my name to such a great event," Surin said at the press briefing on March 1 when the Games announced his involvement. "The world-wide francophone community means a lot to me. It will be a pleasure both to compete at the games and to support my adopted country, while having a chance to be with my fellow runners from all over the world."

Bruny was born on July 12, 1967 at Cap-Haitien, a small city in Haiti. At the age of seven, his parents immigrated to Canada. He has three sisters. At the age of 17, Bruny became attracted to track and field. His initial success in the long jump and triple jump earned him a spot on the Canadian national team. He attended several international meets including the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. In 1989, Bruny began to focus his attention on the sprints, in particular the 100 metres. This is when Bruny's prominence on the national and international stage began to rise.

February 27: Jason Gardener runs third sub 6.5 of 2000 to win Euro 60m
Jason Gardener won the European 60m final today in Belgium, edging out the man who took the title from him in 1998. Gardener equaled Colin Jackson's meet record of 6.49 to win the race. Gardener held of Greek sprinters Georgios Theodoridis and 1998 Champion Angelos Pavlakakis to the wire. Italy's Stefano Tilli broke the 6.6 mark for the first time in the final, finishing fourth in 6.59. The runner I was most impressed with was sixth place finisher, Kostyantin Rurak of Ukraine who bettered his personal best in every race.

"It's great to have achieved my goal for the season. Hopefully I can maintain my unbeaten record in Glasgow next week, then I will take a break before thinking about the Olympics." Gardener told reporters after the race.

It was a great championship as Britain gets their sprint double.

February 26: Christian Malcolm - European 200m Champ
It was a great final today in Belgium, as Britian's Christian Malcolm won the 200m final in a blazing time of 20.54, setting a new personal best. Malcolm's training partner Julian Golding was third in 21.05, a slow time considering all the finalists ran Sub21 in the semi-final. Patrick Stevens, who set a Belgium national record in the semi-finals was second in 20.7. Tommorow will be the 60m semifinals and final

As many expected, the Australian 100m Final came down to two men, Matt Shirvington (PB- 10.03) and Patrick Johnson (WL Time- 10.15). They both won their semi-finals and in the final, Shrivington pulled away from Johnson and the field, winning in 10.26 (w:-0.3), .06 ahead of Johnson. The win was Shirvington's third consecutive national title. Veteran sprinter Damien Marsh was third in 10.4. New Zealand's Chris Donaldson who was strong through the heats was fourth in 10.41.

16,500 people attended the race at Sydney's Olympic Stadium.

I was unaware of this race until I was looking through the IAAF Top Performance list. On February 5, Bruny Surin won a 50m race in Montreal, in 5.69 seconds. Canada's Nicolas Macrozonaris was second in 5.79 seconds.
February 25: Young Dos Santos wins Hamilton games, Bailey second
HAMILTON (CP) -- Donovan Bailey of Oakville, Ont., found only good portents in a second-place finish in the 50-metre dash at the Spectator Indoor Games on Friday night, the Hamilton Spectator reported.

"This tells me things are good," said Bailey, who is still trying to regain
his world record form off an Achilles tendon injury. "I'm happy. My therapist is happy. My coach is happy. This is good."

Troy dos Santos of the North York Track Club won in 5.76 seconds. Bailey clocked 5.78, some 0.16 off his meet record.

"That wasn't good and I'm still making mistakes but my acceleration was good and I've got another 50 metres after that (in the 100-metre Olympic event)," the 100-metre Olympic said.

The meet at Copps Coliseum attracted about 3,500 spectators.

In the men's 100m, Patrick Johnson and New Zealand's Chris Donaldson lead the 100m times after two rounds with a 10.18 and 10.23 respectively. While Johnson and Shirvington rank as the favourites for the national title, lots of Australians like Damien Marsh and Adam Basil still look good.

January 29: English Indoor Championships
Jason Gardener ran the fastest 60 meters in the world this season to clinch a convincing victory in 6.53 seconds at the English indoor championships on Saturday. The race had been expected to be a showdown between Britain's two world bronze medalists from last year - Gardener, third indoors, and Dwain Chambers, third in Seville at the outdoors.

But within four paces of the start, Chambers pulled up, after losing his stride pattern coming out of the blocks. Gardener looked silky smooth and must now rate as the favorite for next month's European indoor championships in Ghent, Belgium. But he will miss a clash against world champion Maurice Greene here next month, preferring to concentrate on his training for the championship meeting.

Chambers, trying to explain his starting problem, said: "Maybe I was too anxious. I just remember the gun going and I dropped. There was no way I could pick it up from there." Chambers will not race at the European indoors, but he will face Greene when the American races in Birmingham.
