ISRAELI PREMIER LEAGUE, 2006-07 -
THE STATISTICS

Many summaries have been made about the wonderful Israeli League of 2006-07, both official and unofficial. One of the ways to sum up the season, though undoubtedly not complete and perfect, is to look upon the bare facts. Who was the best, who played well both home and away, who scored most, etc. I tried to make these summaries as short and interesting as possible, to touch every relevant and interesting point that can explain the relegation or the great success. Unfortunately, as this year I spent large parts of time in Germany, and therefore was away from the real Israeli action, the summaries lack the certain information (keepers, goal passes, the best, etc.) they possessed in the last years; still, I think it's better to have at least something than nothing at all. So, don't judge me too severely, would you??

NOTE: I would like to thank my foreign subscribers who fixed my spelling in some of the foreign names. Here I'll try to bring the names of the foreign players in the most correct spelling possible.

THE CUP ROAD:

THE BIGGEST VICTORY: 4:1 over SC Ashdod, A, Week 07 (Round 1).

THE BIGGEST LOSS: 1:3 to Maccabee Netanya , A, Week 05 (Round 1).
                             Maccabee Petakh-Tikwa, A, Week 09 (Round 1).

THE BEST GOALS:
* Michael Zandberg, 2:0 vs Maccabee Herzliya (3:0), Week 06 (Round 1).
  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  A stunning personal effort of Michael Zandberg, who got a long-range pass
  from Derek Boateng, headed it forward to run away from one defender, raised
  the ball with his left leg over another defender and then, without letting
  the ball touch the ground, lobbed it from 20 meters over the advancing
  Shaul Smadja into the net.

* Milovan Mirosevic, 1:0 vs Hapoel Tel-Aviv (1:1), Week 13 (Round 2).
  -------------------------------------------------------------------
  The Chilean forward of Beitar Jerusalem got famous, perhaps, not for the
  amount of his goals in the yellow-black uniform, but for their sheer beauty.
  Getting a ball from Yoav Ziv from the right wing in this top encounter,
  Mirosevic volleyed it from 18 meters in a curved fashion to the right corner
  of Shavit Elimelekh at half a height.
  [Position No. 6 in "The 10 Best Goals" survey of Sport5 subscribers].

* Milovan Mirosevic, 2:0 vs Hapoel Kefar-Saba (2:0), Week 14 (Round 2).
  ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  The 2nd beauty strike of Milovan Mirosevic within one week! This time, it
  was an effort similar to Zandberg's. Getting a ball some 30 meters from the
  net, Mirosevic outran 2 defenders with throwing the ball over them and still
  keeping it in his possession, and then finally let it return to the ground
  to volley it from 12 meters to the right corner of the helpless Ohad Levite.
  [Position No. 4 in "The 10 Best Goals" survey of Sport5 subscribers].

* Derek Boateng, 1:0 vs Hapoel Kefar-Saba (2:1), Week 26 (Round 3).
  -----------------------------------------------------------------
  The purchase of 2 World Cup participants, Derek Boateng of Ghana by Beitar
  Jerusalem and Luis Marin of Costa Rica by Maccabee Netanya, turned out to
  be a great investment, ultimately ensuring those two clubs the Championship
  and the Vice-Championship. Boateng, despite his short temper and 2 red
  cards, proved to be a great midfielder, conducting the play of the fresh
  Champions alongside with Zandberg. Each of them scored 4 goals, and 1 goal
  of each of them deserves to be featured in this list. Boateng's moment of
  glory came as the defence of Hapoel Kefar-Saba headed the ball seemingly
  away from the danger zone, only to see the midfielder hit a stunning volley
  from 30 meters to the right low corner of Ohad Levite. An effort reminding
  a bit of a stunning volley of Steven Gerrard in the FA Cup final of 2006
  against West Ham.
  [Position No. 2 in "The 10 Best Goals" survey of Sport5 subscribers].

* David Amsalem, 1:0 vs Ha'Koakh Amidar Ramat-Gan (1:1), Week 29 (Round 3).
  -------------------------------------------------------------------------
  There were many critical comments about the skill of Beitar Jerusalem this
  season, but not only were the Champions better than their rivals, they also
  scored a handful of stunning goals. However, the one standing even above
  the already described efforts was the goal of the veteran defender David
  Amsalem. Getting a ball from a right wing at the left edge of the box,
  Amsalem raised his threatening left foot and volleyed the ball under a near
  crossbar of Marshall Odah, "The Goal of the Season".
  ["Goal Of The Season" in "The 10 Best Goals" survey of Sport5 subscribers].

THE BEST PLAYER: Michael Zandberg, midfielder.

THE BEST GOAL:
* Itai Schechter, 1:0 vs Maccabee Petakh-Tikwa (1:0), Week 07 (Round 1).
  ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  The runners-up of this season emphasized mainly their defending abilities,
  led by the acrobatic Liran Strauber in the net and the reliable Luis Marin
  in the central defence. However, once in a while they also had to score in
  order to reach the Vice-Championship, and there they relied primarily on
  the Ivorian scorer Isaac Obodo and the young Israeli international Itai
  Schechter. In the game against the top outfit from Petakh-Tikwa, Schechter
  succeeded to take the ball some 60 meters from the net and to outrun all
  the defence before beating Ohad Cohen from a close range.

THE BEST PLAYER: Luis Marin (Costa Rica), defender.

THE BEST GOAL:
* Dejan Ilic, 1:1 vs Maccabee Netanya (2:1), Week 24 (Round 3).
  -------------------------------------------------------------
  Leading 1:0 and being a better team in this game, Netanya somehow failed in
  the dying seconds of the 1st half to guard Dejan Ilic, who was holding the
  ball some 28 meters from the net. The resulting shot of the Serbian forward
  found his way under the left crossbar of the guests, despite the impressive
  flight of Liran Strauber and his right hand thrown overhead.

* Giovanni Rosso, 1:0 vs Hapoel Kefar-Saba (2:2), Week 28 (Round 3).
  ------------------------------------------------------------------
  Yet another beautiful effort of the eternally young Giovanni Rosso, whose
  influence on the Israeli soccer in the last 11 years can hardly be praised
  enough. Playing a perfect double pass with Omer Perets, Rosso let the ball
  jump on the ground near the box edge, before he curled it under the right
  crossbar of the stunned Ohad Levite.

THE BEST PLAYER: Kale Tvrtko (Croatia), keeper.

    HAPOEL TEL-AVIV is the Israeli Cup Holder for the season of 2006-07.

THE BIGGEST VICTORY:  5:1 over Hapoel Petakh-Tikwa, H, Week 32 (Round 3).

THE BIGGEST LOSS: 0:4 to Maccabee Haifa, A, Week 25 (Round 3).

THE BEST GOAL:
* Salim Tuama, 2:0 vs Maccabee Tel-Aviv (3:0), Week 33 (Round 3).
  ----------------------------------------------------------------
  The Reds had to wait for their first really beautiful goal till the very
  last game of the season, but what a goal it was!.. Salim Tuama, who was
  instrumental in the successful European season of the Reds and whose great
  free kick beat the giants of Glasgow Rangers, got a diagonal free kick from
  22 meters against the most formidable keeper in the Middle East, Kale
  Tvrtko of Maccabee Tel-Aviv. It seldom gets better than the resulting free
  kick perfectly under Kale's right crossbar. The wall and the desperately
  flying Kale were hardly to blame - even Buffon or Kahn would've been no
  match for such a precision.

* Rami Duani, 3:0 vs Maccabee Tel-Aviv (3:0), Week 33 (Round 3).
  --------------------------------------------------------------
  Amazingly enough, the next goal of the Reds, the last in the whole season,
  deserves to be mentioned here as well. A great lob of Gil Vermouth over the
  pathetic defence of Maccabee Tel-Aviv in this game caught the Yellows with
  their pants down trying to create an offside trap. Rami Duani found himself
  alone in the box, but it was his turn and immediate flat volley kick that
  robbed Kale Tvrtko of a chance to exercise his excellence in a one-to-one
  situation.

THE BEST PLAYER: Salim Tuama, midfielder.

THE BIGGEST LOSS: 0:4 to Maccabee Herzliya, H, Week 18 (Round 2).

THE BEST GOAL:
* Alain Masudi, 2:2 vs Ha'Koakh Amidar Ramat-Gan (3:3), Week 06 (Round 3).
  ------------------------------------------------------------------------
  In arguably the best game of the season, the defending Champions found
  themselves 0:2 down at home to a clear underdog during the break, staged a
  stunning comeback and led 3:2 only to be denied by a master strike of Dan
  Roman deep in the injury time. Historically speaking, it was the first ever
  game of a German player in the Israeli league - and the young Julian
  Reinhard in the Ramat-Gan net was stunned by 3 fantastic efforts of the
  Greens. But with all the due respect to the far-rangers of Meshumar and
  Colautti, it was a delicious effort of Alain Masudi to be mentioned. The
  Congolese forward connected to the wide pass and nailed a perfectly shot
  side scissors kick from 12 meters into Reinhard's net.
  [Position No. 3 in "The 10 Best Goals" survey of Sport5 subscribers].

* Javier Dirceu, 4:0 vs Hapoel Tel-Aviv (4:0), Week 25 (Round 3).
  ---------------------------------------------------------------
  In this critical game between the two European heroes of Israel, there was
  everything - full dominance of the Greens, missed penalty, red cards and,
  above all, beautiful goals. The real topping of the pie was the last gasp
  effort of Javier Dirceu after a free kick. The ball was played, and Dirceu
  nailed a stunner worth of Roberto Carlos, from roughly 40 meters unter the
  left crossbar of Shavit Elimelekh. Two historic goals, of Thorsten Frings
  against Costa Rica from the last World Cup, or of Haifa's Raymondas
  Zutautas against Manchester United in the Champions' League of 2002-03,
  immediately come to mind.
  [Position No. 7 in "The 10 Best Goals" survey of Sport5 subscribers].

THE BEST PLAYER: Nir Davidovich, keeper.

  one of the best foreigners ever to appear in Israel, started in a greatly
  similar fashion to that of one of his famous predecessors, Alexander Uvarov.
  After the first 5 games of the season in each case, the position of Maccabee
  Tel-Aviv was precarious; afterwards there started long unbeaten runs to the
  top, in which both of the keepers played a pivotal role. In the game against
  a surprisingly strong and attacking in spirit Hapoel Kefar-Saba, Kale was to
  be thanked for keeping the score from being humiliating for the Yellows.
  However, he could for once do nothing against a skillful effort of Samuel
  Yeboah, who got the ball at the edge of the box, turned around and shot it
  without preparation under Kale's left crossbar.

THE BEST PLAYER: Guillermo Israelevich, midfielder.

THE BEST GOAL:
* Reuven Oved, 1:1 vs Hapoel Petakh-Tikwa (3:1), Week 05 (Round 1).
  -----------------------------------------------------------------
  A magnificent effort of the midfielder, who succeeded to control the ball
  under the defensive pressure, to turn around and to free himself from the
  clutch of no less than 4 defenders and finally to hammer a ball from 25
  meters under the right crossbar of the veteran keeper Rafi Cohen.
  [Position No. 5 in "The 10 Best Goals" survey of Sport5 subscribers].

* Lior Asulin, 2:1 vs Maccabee Haifa (2:1), Week 15 (Round 2).
  ------------------------------------------------------------
  Nir Davidovich, the keeper of Haifa, was responsible this season for a
  great run of his team in Europe (with European press praising him a lot
  for solid performances against FC Liverpool, AJ Auxerre, Glasgow Rangers,
  Partisan Belgrade, CSKA Moscow and Espanyol Barcelona) and for being a
  ray of light in the otherwise greatly disappointing Israeli season of the
  Greens. However, he also allowed himself a blunder or two of truly epic
  proportions. This time, an unexplicable placement of his urged Lior
  Asulin to try a lob over the keeper from 30 meters and nearly a right
  sideline. The effort turned out to be fruitful and victorious.
  [Position No. 8 in "The 10 Best Goals" survey of Sport5 subscribers].

THE BEST PLAYER: Lior Asulin, forward.

THE BEST GOAL:
* Omer Buchsenbaum, 1:0 vs Maccabee Netanya (1:0), Week 11 (Round 1).
  -------------------------------------------------------------------
  It's hard to evaluate whether a non-conventional effort of Omer Buchsenbaum
  was meant to be a goal shot, a pass into the box or an attempt to win an air
  duel. This way or another, the ball obtained an unbelievable curved route
  and landed from 22 meters into the net, past the back of the astonished
  Liran Strauber.

THE BEST PLAYER: Omer Buchsenbaum, midfielder.

THE BIGGEST LOSS: 0:5 to Maccabee Herzliya, A, Week 27 (Round 3).

THE BEST GOAL:
* Dan Roman, 3:3 vs Maccabee Haifa (3:3), Week 06 (Round 1).
  ----------------------------------------------------------
  We already spoke about this best game of the last season - the stunning
  opening phase of the underdogs, the great comeback of the Greens, the
  unbelievable effort of Alain Masudi... However, the story wouldn't be
  full without an equalizer of Dan Roman in the dying seconds. A magnificent
  sharp shot from 25 meters at half a height to the left corner of Tom
  Almadon was a truly fitting end note to such a game. Though relegated,
  Ha'Koakh can be proud of not being beaten by the Greens this season and
  getting from their triple encounter 7 points out of 9 possible.

* Oshri Gita, 2:3 vs Hapoel Petakh-Tikwa (2:3), Week 28.
  ------------------------------------------------------
  Though successful against Maccabee Haifa, the ultimate relegation of Uri
  Malmilian's team was sealed by losing 3 times to the relegation comrades
  Hapoel Petakh-Tikwa, the only 3 League victories of Petakh-Tikwa that
  season! However, the last such loss also provided a truly beautiful goal.
  Oshri Gita performed a wonderful back scissors kick between the 2 Petakh-
  Tikwa defenders and stunned Barak Vissoker, who couldn't get hold of this
  ball and fumbled it into his own net.
  [Position No. 9 in "The 10 Best Goals" survey of Sport5 subscribers].

THE BEST PLAYER: Mor Golan, midfielder.
