Many summaries have been made about the wonderful Israeli League of 2008-09, both official and unofficial. One of the ways to sum up the season, though undoubtedly not complete and perfect, is to look upon the bare facts. Who was the best, who played well both home and away, who scored most, etc. I tried to make these summaries as short and interesting as possible, to touch every relevant and interesting point that can explain the relegation or the great success. Unfortunately, as this year I spent large parts of time in Germany, and therefore was away from the real Israeli action, the summaries lack the certain information (keepers, goal passes, the best, etc.) they possessed in the last years; still, I think it's better to have at least something than nothing at all. So, don't judge me too severely, would you??
NOTE: I would like to thank my foreign subscribers who fixed my spelling in some of the foreign names. Here I'll try to bring the names of the foreign players in the most correct spelling possible.

THE BIGGEST LOSS: 0:2 to Maccabee Petakh-Tikwa, A, Week 16 (Round 2). Maccabee Netanya , A, Week 20 (Round 2). THE BEST GOALS: * Thembinkosi Fanteni, 3:1 vs Maccabee Petakh-Tikwa (3:1), Week 05 (Round 1). --------------------------------------------------------------------------- What a magnificent effort of the South African forward! Dribbling quite hopelessly some 25 meters from the net, he saw Ohad Cohen standing a bit nonchalantly quite far from his net and lobbed a precise ball into his far corner. * Lior Rafaelov, 1:0 vs Bnei-Sakhnin (1:0), Week 06 (Round 1). ------------------------------------------------------------ The winning goal of the Greens was spectacular, as Lior Rafaelov got a precise ball inside the box from Thembinkosi Fanteni, dribbled past Ali Othman and shot a precise flat left-footer past Meir Cohen. * Muhammed Gadir, 1:0 vs Hapoel Petakh-Tikwa (4:1), Week 11 (Round 1). -------------------------------------------------------------------- The debute goal of a talented Green youngster couldn't have been more spectacular. Getting a ball after the right wing penetration of the veteran Alon Harazi, the 17-years-old forward one-touched it into a well-calculated lob over the young and unexperienced Snir Dori to open the score. * Eyal Golassa, 2:0 vs SC Ashdod (3:1), Week 12 (Round 2). -------------------------------------------------------- Like in the case of Muhammed Gadir, the debute goal of the youngster Eyal Golassa was a beauty. Getting a ball some 40 meters from SC Ashdod's net, the forward started an unstoppable run between the defenders, culminating in the penetration into the box, a misleading move upon his guard and a mighty shot from 14 meters under the right crossbar of Yossi Shekel. * Gustavo Boccoli, 1:0 vs Maccabee Tel-Aviv (1:1), Week 18 (Round 2). ------------------------------------------------------------------- A magnificent effort of the experienced Green Brazilian midfielder, who reacted well to a spilled ball after a corner and nailed it from 18 meters under the left crossbar of Dragoslav Jevric. * Gustavo Boccoli, 2:0 vs Ha'Koakh Amidar Ramat-Gan (2:0), Week 19 (Round 2). --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Brazilian virtuoso of the Greens scored a beautiful goal for the 2nd week in a row, this time preying for the loose ball near the guests' box and guiduing a cruise missile with his left under the left crossbar of the helpless Joslain Mayebi. * Eyal Meshumar, 2:1 vs Hapoel Petakh-Tikwa (2:1), Week 26 (Round 3). ------------------------------------------------------------------- The finishing touch of the game was as beautiful as its start. Eyal Meshumar sent a magnificent shot from 30 meters under the left crossbar of Shavit Elimelekh and won the game for the Greens it what could well become a Championship goal. * Yaniv Katan, 1:0 vs Hapoel Tel-Aviv (1:0), Week 31 (Round 3). ------------------------------------------------------------- In what perhaps was his most important goal since beating Manchester United 7 years ago, Yaniv Katan paved the way for Haifa's Championship in "The Game Of The Season", connecting to the brilliant back roll of Shlomi Arbeitman and hitting a perfect ball from the box line that even the fantastic Vincent Enyeama could only palm into his own goal. THE BEST PLAYER: Yaniv Katan, midfielder.

THE BIGGEST LOSS: 0:3 to Bnei-Yehuda Tel-Aviv, A, Week 18 (Round 2). THE BEST GOALS: * Maharan Lalla, 2:0 vs Maccabee Tel-Aviv (2:0), Week 11 (Round 1). ----------------------------------------------------------------- Maharan Lalla, who already justified his starting place by producing a great goal pass to Samuel Yeboah's opener, this time scored himself - and what a goal it was! Dimitar Telkiyski sent a master ball into the box - and Lalla stunningly volleyed a curved flat ball to the left corner of a helplessly flying Jevric. * Gil Vermouth, 3:0 vs Ha'Koakh Amidar Ramat-Gan (3:0), Week 12 (Round 2). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Soccer is in reality quite an easy game, but can also be lethal for the rivals when played quickly. A stunning one-touch combination of Yeboah - Telkiyski - Yeboah - Vermouth resulted in a fitting flying header of the midfielder under the bar of Neal Abrabanel, what an effort! * Gil Vermouth, 2:0 vs Hapoel Petakh-Tikwa (2:0), Week 15 (Round 2). ------------------------------------------------------------------ In an effort slightly reminiscent of the famous Haim Revivo's winner vs Liverpool, Gil Vermouth got the ball at the left wing, moved towards the center, passed three defenders with elegant dribbling moves and finally released a weak, but a very precise shot to the left corner of the stranded Shavit Elimelekh. * Ben Luz, 1:0 vs Bnei-Yehuda Tel-Aviv (2:1), Week 24 (Round 3). -------------------------------------------------------------- The score was opened with a great combination developed on the right wing, as Ben Luz twice played a clever double-pass with a head of Samuel Yeboah and finally released an unstoppable shot from the box edge, which Dele Aiyenugba could only touch on a way to his net. THE BEST PLAYER: Vincent Enyeama (Nigeria), keeper. Also - "The Best Player of 2009-10".

THE BIGGEST VICTORY: 4:0 over Ha'Koakh Amidar Ramat-Gan, H, Week 25 (Round 3). THE BIGGEST LOSS: 0:4 to Hapoel Tel-Aviv, A, Week 19 (Round 2). THE BEST GOALS: * Michael Zandberg, 1:0 vs Bnei-Yehuda Tel-Aviv (3:0), Week 09 (Round 1). ----------------------------------------------------------------------- This was yet another wonder goal of this fruitful week. Michael Zandberg released a swirling shot from 30 meters that turned in just in time to kiss the right post of Dele Aiyenugba and to open the score, much to the dismay of the Nigerian International keeper. * Aviram Bruchian, 2:0 vs Hapoel Kiryat-Shmona (2:2), Week 16 (Round 2). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yet another moment of glory for a talented young striker, who reacted to a seemingly harmless deflection and directed not a mighty, but a very precise volley from the box edge into the near post and in. To be fair, the goal was also a fault of Dani Amos, who reacted almost as clumsily and lately as Jens Lehmann against Croatia during the last European Championship. * Cristian Alvarez, 2:1 vs Maccabee Netanya (2:1), Week 21 (Round 2). ------------------------------------------------------------------- In a week of only 8 goals scored, the stunning top game winner of Cristian Alvarez was a real looker. The Chilean defender of the defending Champions advanced with a ball in a seemingly harmless fashion at the left wing and suddenly released a flash shot from 35 meters, which caught the badly placed Liran Strauber off guard and penetrated under his left crossbar. * Idan Vered, 2:0 vs Ha'Koakh Amidar Ramat-Gan (4:0), Week 25 (Round 3). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The clinical finish of Idan Vered, who rolled the ball in a one-to-one situation between the legs of Joslain Mayebi, was prepared by a ball acrobatics of Barak Itzhaki, who with Ronaldinhesque technics bypassed all the defence of the guests as it was simply nonexistent. * Amit Ben-Shoshan, 1:0 vs Maccabee Tel-Aviv (2:0), Week 30 (Round 3). -------------------------------------------------------------------- The young forward overran a hasty Dragoslav Jevric and had an empty goal at his mercy; however, the angle wasn't the best possible, and a defender of Maccabee was rapidly closing it. Ben-Shoshan somehow succeeded to roll the ball exactly between the heels of the rushing defender and the far post, the ball kissing the woodwork and going in. THE BEST PLAYER: Barak Itzhaki, forward.

THE BEST GOALS: * Ravid Gazal, 3:1 vs Hapoel Petakh-Tikwa (3:1), Week 02 (Round 1). ----------------------------------------------------------------- Quite a match for the goal of Abuhatsira less than an hour previously. Ravid Gazal, a winning substitute of Lothar Matthaeus, got a ball from Itai Schechter some 22 meters from the net and without stopping pulled a stunning left-foot shot under the right crossbar of a shell-shocked Shavit Elimelekh. * Dedi Ben-Dayan, 1:0 vs SC Ashdod (2:1), Week 04 (Round 1). ---------------------------------------------------------- To open the score, Netanya indeed needed a deflection off Idan Shriki that misled Grzegorz Szamotulski. However, it was still a great back scissors kick of Dedi Ben-Dayan from 7 meters that we ought to mention here. * Bevan Fransman, 1:0 vs Maccabee Tel-Aviv (1:0), Week 05 (Round 1). ------------------------------------------------------------------ A true contender for "The Goal of the Season" award. Dedi Ben-Dayan rolled a free kick into the path of the South African defender, and Fransman hit a perfect ball from 35 meters that curved in the very last moment into Dragoslav Jevric's close post and kissed the net thereafter. THE BEST PLAYER: Liran Strauber, keeper.

THE CUP ROAD: * 1/16. Hapoel Umm-al-Fahm - 0:0 AET, 10:9 on pens. * 1/ 8. Bnei-Sakhnin - 0:2. THE BIGGEST VICTORY: 3:0 over Sc Ashdod, A, Week 29 (Round 3). THE BIGGEST LOSS: 0:3 to Beitar Jerusalem, H, Week 09 (Round 1). THE BEST GOALS: * Assaf Baldud, 1:0 vs Hapoel Tel-Aviv (1:0), Week 18 (Round 2). -------------------------------------------------------------- The opening salvo for the devastating victory of the revived Bnei-Yehuda over Eli Gutman's title contenders was fired by Assaf Baldud, who set for himself a good shooting position by swinging a defender and then released a precise curved mighty beauty under the left crossbar of Vincent Enyeama. The Nigerian keeper stretched all his limbs into an impressive flight, but could only fingertouch the ball on its unstoppable way to the net. * Eliran Attar, 1:0 vs Maccabee Netanya (1:1), Week 19 (Round 2). --------------------------------------------------------------- If this goal didn't stop you in your tracks, you have no football soul, my friend. What Eliran Attar performed here was nothing less than a reincarnation of the great Marco van Basten himself. A ball was raised by Itzhak Azuz into the box from the right wing, and Attar threw himself into the air and, falling on his back, connected to the ball with his highly raised right foot and guided it under the right crossbar of a thoroughly stunned Liran Strauber. Netanya's keeper wasn't the only one caught with his mouth open - it happened to each and every spectator at the stadium or near the TV sets. * Eliran Attar, 1:1 vs Maccabee Petakh-Tikwa (1:1), Week 28 (Round 3). -------------------------------------------------------------------- The wonderboy of Bnei-Yehuda Tel-Aviv, having already scored "The Goal Of The Season" against Maccabee Netanya, struck again to equalize the score against the team of Ronnie Levi. Getting the ball inside the box, he turned around to mislead two defenders and then with no preparation whatsoever placed an unstoppable ball under the left crossbar of Ohad Cohen. * Eliran Attar, 2:0 vs SC Ashdod (3:0), Week 29 (Round 3). -------------------------------------------------------- Will this guy ever stop this season? This time, it was an effort we are used to seeing from Lionel Messi and his likes. The young Orange forward got the ball in Ashdod's box, bypassed no less than 3 defenders (!) on a tiny spot and released a powerful shot from 10 meters that left no chance whatsoever to Dragan Stojkic. * Eliran Attar, 1:0 vs Bnei-Sakhnin (1:3), Week 33 (Round 3). ----------------------------------------------------------- It's absolutely astonishing how many beautiful goals one can score in one season. Eliran Attar finished his marvellous breakthrough season with a stunning Brazilian dance, which helped him to bypass Meir Cohen in a one-to-one situation and score a goal into an empty net. A real beauty! THE BEST PLAYER: Eliran Attar, forward.

THE BEST GOALS: * Yannick Kamanan, 1:3 vs Maccabee Haifa (2:3), Week 07 (Round 1). ---------------------------------------------------------------- Just when it looked like yet another Yellow disaster in Haifa, Maccabee Tel-Aviv reduced the score with a curious goal. Guillermo Israelevich sent a ball towards the box, and Yannick Kamanan headed it backwards from the box line towards the far away corner of the goal. The ball acquired a glorious spin and landed past the stunned Amir Edri, kissing the post in between. * Haim Megrelashvili, 1:0 vs Maccabee Haifa (1:1), Week 27 (Round 3). ------------------------------------------------------------------- The much more impressive guests had to run after the hosts for nearly an hour in order to snatch a meager point. All this was the fault of the former Vitesse Arnhem defender Haim Megrelashvili, who got a magnificent pass from Shiran Yeini and with a left foot guided the ball expertly under the right crossbar of the advancing Nir Davidovich. * Dan Roman, 2:1 vs Bnei-Yehuda Tel-Aviv (2:1), Week 31 (Round 3). ---------------------------------------------------------------- Quite a clinical finish of this game belonged to Dan Roman, who succeeded to get a free space off his guard and then released a powerful shot from 30 meters, entering the right corner of the helpless Dele Aiyenugba at half a height. THE BEST PLAYER: Dragoslav Jevric (Montenegro), keeper.

THE BEST GOALS: * Amir Lavi, 1:1 vs Maccabee Netanya (1:2), Week 04 (Round 1). ------------------------------------------------------------ The answer of Ashdod close to the end was also spectacular, as Amir Lavi guided a perfect cruise missile from 20 meters to the left high post of a desperately flying Liran Strauber and in. Unfortunately for Ashdod, this effort didn't even suffice for a draw. * David Revivo, 1:0 vs Hapoel Tel-Aviv (1:0), Week 05 (Round 1). -------------------------------------------------------------- The last one of the magnificent efforts in this special week saw David Revivo score the only goal of the game with a stunning shot from 35 meters under the left crossbar of Vincent Enyeama. * David Revivo, 2:0 vs Maccabee Netanya (3:3), Week 15 (Round 2). --------------------------------------------------------------- A magnificent penetration of David Revivo through the right wing of the depleted Netanya's defence resulted in a stunning shot (while running!) from 35 meters under the left crossbar of Liran Strauber. * Dimitar Makriev, 1:1 vs Beitar Jerusalem (2:3), Week 18 (Round 2). ------------------------------------------------------------------ The atonement of David Revivo for a missed penalty came only 5 minutes later. His brilliant pass from the right wing behind the back of a static somewhat Arik Benado landed on the head of the unmarked Dimitar Makriev, who just nodded the ball in between the legs of the helpless Ariel Harush. * Moshe Ohayon, 2:3 vs Beitar Jerusalem (2:3), Week 18 (Round 2). --------------------------------------------------------------- The swan song of Ashdod came deep in the injury time, as a free kick was awarded for the guests inside Beitar's box for Ariel Harush's time- wasting. Moshe Ohayon performed an obligatory ball touch with another player and then swerved the ball under the left crossbar of the hosts. THE BEST PLAYER: David Revivo, midfielder.

THE BIGGEST LOSS: 0:3 to Hapoel Petakh-Tikwa, H, Week 08 (Round 1). THE BEST GOALS: * Isaac Abodo, 2:2 vs Maccabee Tel-Aviv (2:3), Week 04 (Round 1). --------------------------------------------------------------- The second goal of Sakhnin was also quite a watchable event. It was indeed the miscalculation of Jevric on getting to a high ball that let Okocha get possession in the first place; however, it was a sublime lob of the Ivorian player that finally beat the keeper who returned to his goal. * Ihiel Tsagai, 2:0 vs SC Ashdod (2:4), Week 09 (Round 1). -------------------------------------------------------- The dream free kick of Ihiel Tsagai from 30 meters was unexpected because of the angle and caught Grzegorz Szamotulski off guard. To the chagrin of Sakhnin, the 2:0 half-time lead turned out to be useless, as Ashdod answered after the break with 4 goals of its own. * Isaac Abodo, 1:0 vs Hapoel Tel-Aviv (1:0), Week 10 (Round 1). ------------------------------------------------------------- A magnificent effort of a true scorer saw Isaac Abodo get the ball inside Hapoel Tel-Aviv's box, turn around his defender with his right foot and release a killing shot from 10 meters with his left one, leaving even the brilliant Vincent Enyeama no chance whatsoever. * Haled Halaila, 2:1 vs Bnei-Yehuda Tel-Aviv (3:1), Week 33 (Round 3). -------------------------------------------------------------------- The finishing accord of Bnei-Sakhnin was also harmonious. The defence of Bnei-Yehuda couldn't clear the ball out of the box, and finally it came after a certain ping-pong to Haled Halaila. The midfielder stopped it on his chest and then volleyed it from 12 meters precisely under the right crossbar of the helpless Dele Aiyenugba. THE BEST PLAYER: Ali Othman, defender.

THE CUP ROAD: * 1/16. Bnei-Lod - 1:0 (Cespedes). * 1/ 8. Hapoel Kefar-Saba - 1:2 (Abuhatsira). THE BIGGEST VICTORY: 3:0 over Bnei-Sakhnin, A, Week 08 (Round 1). THE BIGGEST LOSS: 1:4 to Maccabee Haifa, H, Week 11 (Round 1). THE BEST GOALS: * Shimon Abuhatsira, 1:1 vs Maccabee Netanya (1:3), Week 02 (Round 1). -------------------------------------------------------------------- This goal left a bit of a bitter taste of unsportiveness, as the correct action of Junior Visa would've been to kick the ball out and to let the doctors take care of an injured Bevan Fransman. Still, the technical grade of the goal was "perfect". Visa sent the ball in a very fast fashion to Pati Nimba, who kicked it down into the path of the young Shimon Abuhatsira - and the latter shot an unstoppable volley from 20 meters under the left crossbar of Liran Strauber. * Shimon Abuhatsira, 1:0 vs Ha'Koakh Amidar Ramat-Gan (1:0), Week 10 (Round 1). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- The young and surprising scorer of Hapoel Petakh-Tikwa scored his 9th goal in 10 games after displaying a magnificent personal skill to completely confuse all the hosts' defence inside the box and to finally beat the keeper Neal Abrabanel. * Shimon Abuhatsira, 1:0 vs Maccabee Haifa (1:2), Week 26 (Round 3). ------------------------------------------------------------------ A wonderful start turned out to be insufficient for Hapoel Petakh-Tikwa. 49 seconds from the start the top League goalscorer Shimon Abuhatsira got a raised ball from Junior Visa and volleyed it to the far corner of Nir Davidovich in half a turn. * Junior Visa, 1:0 vs Maccabee Petakh-Tikwa (2:0), Week 31 (Round 3). ------------------------------------------------------------------- In an effort belonging to the true master of the ball, Junior Visa penetrated for 15 meters alone through the whole defence of Maccabee Petakh-Tikwa consisting of 6 (!) players, before he curled the ball under the left crossbar of Ohad Cohen. * Shimon Abuhatsira, 2:0 vs Maccabee Petakh-Tikwa (2:0), Week 31 (Round 3). ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The prolific young forward got a ball on the box edge, elegantly turned around, ran away from one defender and then completely wrongfooted Ohad Cohen with this simplest of finishes. THE BEST PLAYER: Shimon Abuhatsira, forward.

THE BEST GOALS: * Idan Weitzman, 2:3 vs SC Ashdod (2:3), Week 11 (Round 1). --------------------------------------------------------- The only small consolation for the losing side was a last ditch effort of Idan Weitzman, who judged well a horrendous placement of Grzegorz Szamotulski and spinned the ball from 35 meters under the hapless keeper's bar. * Amir Abu-Arar, 2:0 vs Maccabee Petakh-Tikwa (2:0), Week 29 (Round 3). --------------------------------------------------------------------- In a stunning finish during a quick counterattack deep in the injury time, the young substitute Amir Abu-Arar raised the ball with his left foot over the experienced Morad Magamedov and then hit with the same left foot a magnificent ball from 18 meters that landed under the left crossbar of the helpless Ohad Cohen. THE BEST PLAYER: Barak Badash, midfielder.

THE BEST GOALS: * Yuval Avidor, 1:0 vs Maccabee Petakh-Tikwa (1:2), Week 06 (Round 1). -------------------------------------------------------------------- A great personal skill of Yuval Avidor was expressed well during this goal, as the young forward swang his defender around, ran away from the other, entered the box and placed a very precise lobbing shot over Ohad Cohen and under his left crossbar. * Guy Tsarfati, 1:0 vs Hapoel Tel-Aviv (1:3), Week 29 (Round 3). -------------------------------------------------------------- In what perhaps would turn into the best moment of the relegating team this season, Guy Tsarfati opened the score against the title contenders with a wondershot from 18 meters, finding a tiny gap between the flying superkeeper Vincent Enyeama and his right post. Unfortunately, for the Northerners it was too little and too late. * Amir Nussbaum, 1:0 vs Maccabee Netanya (3:1), Week 30 (Round 3). ---------------------------------------------------------------- The ball seemed to be on its way out of the danger zone, when Amir Nussbaum connected to it and sent an unstoppable flat ball from 25 meters precisely into the left corner of Daniel Lifshitz. It's not quite an effort of Michael Essien, but it's worth mentioning nevertheless. * Tsallakh Hassarmeh, 2:0 vs Beitar Jerusalem (2:0), Week 31 (Round 3). --------------------------------------------------------------------- A stunning finish of the Northern midfielder, who nailed a ball from 25 meters deep under the bar of a surprised Kale Tvrtko. THE BEST PLAYER: Yuval Avidor, forward.
