PBA games score big in viewership. When the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is on, one out of three people watching television are tuned in to the games, according to 1996 Media Pulse People Meter reports, the official measure of TV ratings. PBA viewership increased to nearly one out of two televiewers during Game four of the recent Governors Cup. Overall, the five-hour telecast recorded a 29 percent audience share in 1996, which means that one-third of all people watching TV during those hours followed the PBA games. This reflects a 100 percent increase over the PBA's 14 percent share in 1995. The figures are even more impressive for PBA Game Two of the Governors Cup, which had an audience share of 35 percent in 1996 or a TV household rating of 20 percent in Metro Manila. During the championship series, the PBA's TV audience share jumped to 42 percent for all three conferences. A season-high 51 percent audience share, or one out of two televiewers, was reached during the recent Alaska Milk-Ginebra San Miguel Cup finals. While the people Meter reports measure Metro Manila TV viewership only, it is estimated that figures for nationwide PBA viewership are even higher, considering that the games are more popular in the provinces.
Vintage Sports, producers of the PBA games for TV, moved the
PBA telecast from PTV-4 top IBC-13 in 1996, citing the
broader reach, improved signal reception and better facilities of
IBC-13. It is in this new home where the PBA has flourished in
1996.
