BCAP to pursue fight vs. Jacobs
The Basketball Coaches Association of the Philippines
(BCAP) will not rest on its fight to stop the assumption of
American Ron Jacobs as head coach of San Miguel Beer in the
Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
Thus, stressed BCAP president Joseller "Yeng" Guiao who, in a
telephone interview with the Bulletin yesterday, added that his
group would elevate the case to Labor secretary Leonardo
Quisumbing if his regional director for NCR Romeo Young does
not revoke the license he granted Jacobs to coach in the pro
league.
Saying that BCAP's action came upon the recommendation of
the DOLE secretary himself, Guiao said that Young faces
charges of "incompetence and gross misjudgement" for ruling in
favor of Jacobs and San Miguel Beer.
"We are giving DOLE enough time to correct its mistake and if
there is no action until Monday, we will seek a higher authority
on this matter," said Guiao, a former PBA coach who is now
also commissioner of the Philippine Basketball League.
The BCAP, through Guiao, wrote DOLE NCR regional director
Romeo Young last Monday asking the latter to "rectify its
oversight" in issuing a working permit to Jacobs.
"Our association maintains that your issuance of permit to Mr.
Jacobs is a violation of the Supreme Court ruling based on the
Tim Cone vs. Ruben Torres decision promulgated on April 22,
1991," Guiao said in his letter to Young. "May I emphasize that
our only desire is the proper implementation of the law based on
existing jurisprudence."
By providing DOLE with a copy of the Supreme Court ruling,
Guiao said that Young's office cannot claim ignorance of the
former which could have prevented him from giving Jacobs the
go-signal to call the shots for the Beermen in the PBA First
Conference.
Guiao also contested Young's reasons for his decision especially
when the latter said that Jacobs would take two local coaches as
his understudies for the eventual transfer of his expertise and the
difference in the standard of coaching between the Philippines
and the United States.
