Named after some guy named ''Throckmorton,'' and if that was your name your friends would shorten it to ''Throg'' too...

Throgs Neck, a nifty little place in the Southeast Bronx, is where my Mom grew up and where her parents lived until they moved out to New Rochelle to an apartment. My Aunt, Uncle and Cousin still live there, though.

Personally, I don't pretend to know how to bound it, but it's probably fair to say Westchester Creek on the west, Westchester Ave. on the north, and the Sound on the east and the East River to the south. That would encompass the infamous Bruckner Interchange (Henry Bruckner, who also has a Boulevard and an Expressway named after him, was a Bronx Borough President), Ferry Point Park and put Westchester Square, Crossroads of the World, just out of bounds.

Highlights:

Louis' Seafood and Pizza

: Another great NYC restaurant that you've never heard of. Unlike the Pine Tavern (see my Van Nest page for more info), ballplayers aren't known to hang out here, but the food is damn good. Try the Veal Parmigiana, and get either the Ravioli or the French Fries on the side. Mere spaghetti is a waste here.

Not too hard to find: on East Tremont Ave., less than a block south of Bruckner Blvd. Take the East Tremont Ave. exit off I-95 South; I actually can't remember the way from the Cross Bronx, but it's probably just as easy to get off at Country Club Rd. and circle around from Bruckner Blvd. Call (718) 822-4600.

Parking can be a problem if the lot next door in front of the Chinese restaurant and the [update 11/96; FORMER!] Paint store [update 9/97: IT'S NOW A 7-11! YEAH!] is full. Do your best; it's worth it.

Louis' is right next to the site of the old Interboro Movie Theater, a building known as "The Itch" for a long-corrected flea problem, that housed only one screen when my Mom was growing up. At its closing it housed four screens. She said it was too small a theater in the sixties. Go figure. The Itch, which wasn't raking in the money its owners wanted, was closed in the summer of 1996.

East Tremont Avenue can be kind of interesting. It's a light and tumble journey (as Simon and Garfunkel might say) from Bruckner Blvd. along Tremont back up to Westchester Square, about a 15-20 minute walk; after a meal, it's a nice walk-off.

Public Transportation to Throgs Neck

Subway: Nothing runs directly into the neighborhood. The 6 train runs to Westchester Square and makes a few stops along Westchester Ave. before reaching Pelham Bay Park; take the bus into the neighborhood.

Buses: From the Square: 40 and 42 buses run from Morrisania (along the Harlem River) down Tremont Ave. to Randall Ave; the 40 runs all the way to Fort Schuyler, while the 42 runs to Harding Ave., more toward Ferry Point Park. The 8 bus comes from the North Bronx, White Plains Rd. and 225th St, down Williamsbridge Rd. to the Square and then up Westchester Ave. and down Crosby Ave. and then into residential areas and the Throgs Neck Bridge area.
From Pelham Bay Park station: The 5 bus starts at PBP Station and runs along Bruckner Blvd. into Sound View and beyond. The Q-BX 1, I know nothing about except that it starts at PBP Station and runs along Bruckner to the Interchange and over the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge to Flushing. Fare? I dunno. Stops? I dunno. Be forewarned--if you take it, as far as I know you're going to Queens.
