THE GREAT "BREAKAWAY" GIVEAWAY
David House has a VHS NTSC copy of Tonya's movie debut,
"Breakaway" to give away. To enter, just go to his site and leave
your name and e-mail address. But be in quick - he's closing off
entries on Friday the 10th, US time, and he tells us he's already
got 67 so far; yet another indication of the awesome popularity
of Tonya. The URL is:
http://www.davidhouse.com/tonya/video.html
David has also has added several new things to his site lately: a
few more photos, including some of Tonya's dramatic rescue of an
old lady back in October 1996, and a little ditty from 1994
called "The Saga of Tonya Harding", artist unknown, that you can
listen to. You'll need a Real Audio player to listen to it, but
you can download one for free from http://www.realaudio.com. An
attempt by David to get Tonya listed as one of "People" magazines
50 most beautiful people of 1998 a couple of months ago failed,
but then when you're up against tough competition like Hank the
Angry Drunken Dwarf (who came in first) then it was probably a
lost cause anyway.
We have also been active on upgrading our site: we've now added a
"Mission Statement", indexed the FAQ and added a few sections on
the exact impact of the Life Ban. We've also added a few nice
color pictures of some book covers and a contact address for Dick
Button, who has been a known Tonyaphile in the past. We're busy
composing letters to be sent out to the various organizations
we've listed. The first batch should go out soon.
Soon you'll also be able to download our Tonya T-shirt design. Be
sure to be on the lookout for our new "Sid & Nancy" tribute page,
coming soon as well. And while we're on that topic...
FAKE PORN CAUSES STIR
Shortly after our last issue in May a certain skater from the
Massachussetts area complained about somebody distributed fake
porno pictures of her. Well, it sure as heck wasn't us. The
culprit was some web site in California, but the pictures were
quickly removed after a threat of legal action. At least it makes
a change from all the fake Tonya porn that's about.
NEW TONYA FORUM
Tired of wading through all the spam and off topic postings from
self styled "hackers" on alt.fan.tonya-harding.whack.whack.whack?
A solution is now at hand: Puppetboy has now created a Tonya
discussion group on Deja News. Filling in a gap sorely left when
Jim Maxey junked his Webconference board, it's called:
dejanews.members.rec.puppetboy.tonya-friends
This is a moderated group, so hopefully it won't attract as many
crackpots as a.f.t.h.w.w.w. And yes, he IS going to get those fan
club membership cards mailed out eventually...!
BOOKSHOP
Mike Quigley, aka Mr. Mike, has a copy of the "Oregonian"'s Tonya
book "Fire On Ice" for sale. Essential reading for any
Tonyaphile, this now hard to find out-of-print title contains 8
pages of photos. If you're interested, visit his web site at:
http://www.mjq.net/books
He also has lots of other books there as well.
TARA! TARA! TARA!
As the summer skating hiatus hits home, we thought we'd take the
opportunity to enlist our readers help in solving one of the
greatest issues that confronts skating today, and which caused
heated debate over on rec.sport.skating.ice.figure; namely:
Does Tara Lipinski look like Veruca Salt from "Willy Wonka and
the Chocolate Factory"?
If you've got a copy of the movie and want to compare it
against your skating tapes, check it out. We'd like to hear YOUR
opinion. (Note: some people claimed that looks aren't the only
resemblance between Tara and Veruca, but we don't want to get
into that).
PRIVACY POLICY
As the Tonya comeback campaign grows, our fame has started to
spread. For instance, Portland ISP Teleport.com actually
mentioned "The Portlandian" on its web site several months ago
back during the Olympics. Our mailing list has now
correspondingly also grown quite large, and because of this we
have changed the way in which we mail out our issues in order to
protect the privacy of our subscribers. There are two reasons for
this:
a) Because of the controversial nature of our main subject,
some people may well want to "remain in the closet" as it
were, rather than risk the ire of their skating friends.
b) As the list grows in size there is the danger that a spammer
could sign onto the list to harvest names.
As a result, we have now switched to mailing out "The
Portlandian" with the recipients as blind carbon copies.
Unfortunately, this technique is also abused by spammers to hide
their identity, so there is a danger that it might trip some
anti-spam filters. Usually it is possible to work around this
somehow, - if you have trouble, just contact us and we'll see if
the experts at our Special Duties Section can sort it out.
By the way, if you want to contact us (and haven't done so
before), the best way is to go to our site and use the feedback
form or the address that's listed there - the "hallterr" account
located at Hotmail.com. The address we post this from is mainly
used to divert spam from our real account and is only checked
occasionally.
GILLOOLY LEAVES US STONE COLD
"Lie Detector" has come and gone. As expected, Jeff
Gillooly/Stone managed to con tired old legal has-been Marcia
Clark into believing his same tired old story, aided by the usual
shoddy, unscientific methodology that leaves us grateful these
things aren't accepted as evidence in court. Anybody with any
knowledge of polygraphs knows, for instance, that you're supposed
to intersperse the real questions with neutral "control"
questions, something that was not done here. In addition to
Gillooly there was also a wrestler who tried to prove that
professional wrestling is not fixed. He failed his test. Might we
suggest that any sequel should include a session with an Ice
Dancing judge as this sport now has even less credibility
than pro wrestling and seems to sorely need to prove it isn't
rigged as well. Not to mention that Pasha Grischuk is way more
outrageous than anything the WWF could ever come up with.
By the way - if Shawn Eckardt was to merge his World Bodyguard
Service with the World Wrestling Federation and World
Championship Wrestling, not only would it hugely increase his
credibility, but his Web site would be www.wwfwcwwbs.com - quite
a mouthful.
