A line-drive contact hitter with excellent speed, Gary held his own in the Texas league in '89, his first full season in the pros. He led Midland with seven triples and batted a resounding .286. In the field, gary topped the league in assists and fielding average, and was named as shortstop on the All-Star team.
Gary was picked in the sixth round of the '88 draft, and led his Northwest League team in BA, runs, and hits.
Gary, a first-time selectee to the All-Star Team and first-time .300-hitter in 1995, cracked six triples in 99 games after having hit just four in his 433 games prior. Asked what accounted for the sudden frequency of three-baggers, he replied, "I'm not stopping at second."
