After that we ate lunch. I think lunch was provided by the Beaver Dam Youth Hockey Association. Thanks!! After lunch was the skating part of the seminar. I heard that they skated you alot, boy were they right! Remember how on my first page I said to pay attention? Well guess what, a couple of guys didn't and we had to take a couple of pretty hard laps. Nothing wrong with that, I need the exercise.
After the skating , we had to take the closed book exam. I think I did pretty well. Hopefully I passed. After the exam we all finally got to go home. It was a full day which ended at about 4:00 PM. What a day! Now it is practice until the season starts. Good Luck.
Did a Pee Wee A game. Pretty physical game. Game went into overtime with the score tied 5 to 5. My partner called tripping in the overtime and the home team won the game. Could not believe the fans booed. After the game while still on the ice a lady came upto the boards to tell me something.
She said: 'You guys really did a bad job of officiating tonight. They all worked so hard and you gave the game to the other team.' Could not believe she told me that! I said thank you and she left. Really wanted to state that since all the players worked hard, you should not have booed either team or the officiating, but I bit my tounge and didn't say anything.
Did a Pee Wee C game today. A pretty hard fought game. Not too many penalties. Called a couple of roughing penalties. Kids while checking the opponent would put their arms out and move shove than check them. Called the penalties when they got a little violent and high. Explained it to both coaches. Other than that noting noteworthy happened.
Had two games today a Bantam A and Pee Wee C. Pee Wee game went pretty smooth. A good hard fought game, not to many penalties or rough stuff to Report.
Now on to the bantam game. Not one of my best games. Lost my head and screwed up once or twice. Here were my two major goofs: Had one player on team A with a minor. Another player on team A had a double minor. One player on team B had a minor all at the same time. Should have been 5 on 3 for 3 minutes, but I screwed up - I gave them 5 on 4 for 3 minutes.
Gave the goalie a game for fighting but didn't throw him out of the game. Read the book later and I was wrong.
Now on to the game.
This was a particularily rough game. Not lots of penalties but just rough. Around the end of the game all hell broke loose. Two kids started fighting. When they started fighting more kids jumped in including one goalie. We are on the ice trying to breakup this up. It was not fun.
The end result was 4 game misconducts for fighting and one 5+game for spearing. Never called a spear before. Tried to escort a kid back to his bench. He shoved my hand away and told me 'get the #@$%& off me ref!' That did not go over well. Warned him if he touched me again he would get a gross. He kept jawing but I just let it slide. That guy has no respect for officials. Found out this was my partners first bantam game. What a welcome! He did a great job. That's it for now.
Had a Peewee A and a Girls game today. The PW-A game went smooth no problems. The Girls game was rough. It was rougher than the PW-A game I did. A couple of girls got hurt. Gave my first bench for unsportsmanlike this game. Coach says 'shut up ref' so I gave him a bench. He came within an inch of getting a game. The game would have been good if it wasn't so rough.
Had 2 games again, a Bantam A and Girls game. Called another spearing again. That's twice this season. I had never called a spear before this season. Other than that the game went OK. Talked to my partner after the game and asked why I gave him a major/game and not a minr. Explained to him that there was no minor for that. He said that he really didn't get him that hard( he got him in the upper back). Told him I had to call it. You let that go, and then the game can go downhill from there.
Girls game was good, a clean game - no checking. No t like the last Girls game I did. Found out the opposing team had a guy as their goaltender. The other coach already knew so they kept playing. Till next time.
Had 2 games again today, a Bantam A and PeeWee C3. The Bantam game was an interesting one. They played against the Pettit Select A Girls team. The Girls team did a great job against the boys. Very clean game. Only 1 penalty. There was no checking in this game. Now my second game, that was different. Sometimes it's hard to switch gears from a non-checking to a checking game. This was a hard fought game with not many penalties. But lots of hard hits. Finally got to ref with my friend, Terry. It was great, I think we make a good team. Two of the best games I did this season.
This is a season of firsts, I guess. This PeeWee A game was kind of ugly. Alot of penalties on one team not too many on the other. Gave the coach for one team a bench for Unsportsman Like (slamming the door a little too loud in protest of a penalty call). That put him down 2 men, not a good play on his part. Gave a kid a major and game for fighting. Here is where the first comes in, as the kid was leaving the ice, someone in the stands form the other team shouted 'auf weidersehn' (hopefully I spedded that right, my high school German was never great anyways). I went over to the crowd and chastised them for that remark. There is no place in the game for that stuff.
Two more games this weekend. Bantam A and Bantam White. The Bantam White game was first. Not an easy game to do. Alot of center ice play and not much flow. It was hard to keep the legs moving. I felt like I was skating in mud the whole game, and I probably looked like it too. Not a bad game though. Gave the visiting team a bench minor for too many men. The Coach was not happy, I explained to him why I gave them the penalty - the player who came off the bench deliberately played the puck before the other player was on the bench. The coach told me I was wrong(as usual) that he was within 10 feet of the bench and that was OK. I just skated away.
The Bantam A game was much better lots of skating and a good flow to the game. You can really tell the difference out there when there is a good flow to the game. My partner and I goof a faceoff or two. Check the ref question and let me know what you think. Other than that a really good game.
Finally, some high school games! Since our association lost their HS team I haven't been able to do any. I got 4 (one got cancelled) at the Washington County Youth Hockey Assoc. wher a good friend of mine, Chris. officiates. It was fun, its been a long time since the two of us did a game together. It's always good to work with someone you know. All the games were 2 man and pretty fast and furious. We came out of them alive and none the worse for wear. We called good games and the coaches did not yell at us too much. Pretty clean games all in all. It was great fun.
