Milwaukee -- Chipper Jones is on pace to reach career-highs in home runs (45) and RBIs (134). Yet his most improved statistic has almost gone unnoted. Jones' throwing error Monday night was just his third of the season.
A .944 fielder when he opened the season, he has three errors in 152 total chances (.980). The average starting major league third baseman last season fielded at .952. His rookie season, Jones made 25 errors. This year, he's on pace to commit just eight.
'"He's a lot better than I thought he was," shortstop Walt Weiss said. "What impressed me is his range. He goes to his left so well. There are balls you know for sure you've got to go get in the hole and he's coming in front of me and making the play. It's probably happened 10 times this year."
