- Elected with 444 of 460 votes (96.52%) with the fourth highest total, surpassed by only Tom Seaver, Ty Cobb, and Hank Aaron
- Youngest member of Hall of Fame at age 45
- In his speech, Mike says:
- "If I had to do it all over again, I'd do it in Philadelphia. The only changes I'd make would be in me. I'd be less sensitive, I'd be more outgoing, and I'd be more appreciative to the fans' expectations of me. Can we put to rest any misunderstandings we've had?"
- "Four special teammates have touched my life and career. They have played a special role in helping me reach the highest plateau a ballplayer can reach. My success was all because of the positive influence of Dick Allen, Pete Rose, Bob Boone, and Dave Cash. These four guys have molded my career with their day-to-day positive reinforcement. I assure you that without their positive reinforcement, I would not be standing here today."
- He also speaks about his long-time friend, Pete Rose and how he should be enshrined in the Hall of Fame
- On the state of baseball after the strike: "We can't afford to lose any more foans to fast paced games like basketball and football. We need to recapture the fan's interest. I'd like to challenge players and owners to find an independent commissioner to resolve any differences."
