Brooke O'Brien was born in Victoria, Australia on the 8th February 1984. She currently resides in Melbourne, Victoria where she trains at the VIS (Victorian Institute of Sport) under Fiona Bird, Mark Calton and Shoa Yi Jiang. Brooke began gymnastics on the advice of a friend in 1991 at the Burwood Gym Club. After being spotted by a talent scout at a local competition, she moved to the high performance program just one year later in 1992. In 1996 Brooke took a break from gymnastics. Six months later she was back in the gym and has not looked back since. In 1999 Brooke has made the step up from junior to senior level competition. At her first Australian Senior National Championships, she finished consistently in the top ten and earned a place on the National and OAP (Olympic Athlete Program) squads. When she is not in the gym, Brooke attends highschool and enjoys reading, shopping and surfing the net! As one of the emerging stars of the sport in Australia, there is every chance that Brooke will achieve her Olympic dream. |

Brooke has a two sisters and the family have a pet dog! Brooke's best national competition performance was at the 1998 Junior Australian National championships, where she was 2nd AA and she finished in the top 6 in all events. Brooke's best international competition performance was at the 1999 Foxsport Challenge in Perth where she finished 9th AA. Brooke's favourite TV show is Dawson's Creek and among her favourite foods are ice-cream, chocolate, fruit salad and her Mum's chicken wings! Brooke lists her favorite moment as winning the bronze medal on vault at the prestigious Canberra Cup (Junior International) in 1998. [photo left : Brooke (2nd from right) during the AA] In 1996 Brooke temporarily left the sport of gymnastics. She returned to the gym six months later and has gone from strength to strength since. |
