* -The NHL closed from Feb.8 to Feb.24
to send it's players in the
Olympic Games for the 1st
time ever. The first ever Games to truly have
the best players available.
-Hockey's 6 major nations
(Canada, Czech Rep., Finland, Russia, Sweden and the
USA) were given 6 of the top
8 berths in the final round.
Based on the 1995 World
Championships and other qualifying tournaments,
Germany, Slovakia,
Kazakhstan, Austria and Belarus were admitted in the
tournament. Italy and France
were already included, and Japan as host nation.
The winners of Group A and
B in the preliminary round advanced to play
the "Big 6" in the final
round.
-The story of 1998 was Czech
goaltender Dominik Hasek, who carried
his team to the Gold Medal.
Hasek stopped all Canadian shots in a
shootout, then blanked Russia.

* -The breakup of the Soviet Union
forced them to play as the 'Unified
Team' or 'Commonwealth of
Independant States' since athletes in other
various sports were from
former Soviet Republics. The hockey team
however was all ethnic
Russian players.
They played with no logo on
their uniforms, and the Olympic anthem was played
instead of their national
anthem during Medal awards.

* -Professionals were still not allowed to compete in Olympic Games.
-1980 featured the "Miracle on
Ice". The USA team was a collection of unknown
college players put together
by coach Herb Brooks.
They team played 59 games
together before the Olympics, going 42-14-3, which
included a 10-3 loss to the
Soviet Union just 3 days before the tournament.
The Soviets were a team
that was held together year-round, featuring the best
players in the Soviet Union.
They would regularly play NHL clubs and NHL All-Star
teams to a standstill.
The Soviet squad had lost the
1972 Summit Series versus Canada's best by a close
3-4-1 margin. They routinely
beat the NHL's weaker teams, and only the stronger
NHL clubs at the time like
the Montreal Canadiens and Philadelphia Flyers would
create exciting games.
The USA-Soviet Union game
was tied 2-2 after the first period. Soviet coach
Viktor Tikhonov replced
goalie Vladislav tretiak with Vladimir Myshkin to start
the 2nd period. The strategy
seemed to be working as the Soviets led 3-2 after
40 minutes and outshooting
the USA 30-10.
The Americans tied the game
and with 10 minutes to go captain Mark Eruzione
scored for a 4-3 lead. Goalie
Jim Craig stopped everything the rest of the way
for one of the biggest upsets
in sports history.
The USA still had to win
their final game versus Finland for the Gold Medal, which
they did 2 days later with
a 4-2 win.

* -12 years had passed between games due to the Second World War.
-Canada represented by the RCAF
Flyers of Ottawa, a team made up
of servicemen in the Royal
Canadian Air Force.
-As in the World Championships
at the
time, the USA was battling in-fighting
between USA hockey
associations. 2 USA teams were sent, one by AHAUS which
was supported by the IIHF,
the other by the AAU.
During the Opening Ceremonies
both team appeared on the ice, nearly causing
a riot, as police were needed
to restore order.
The AAU team finally decide
to leave, but the IIHF 'outlawed' the US entry
and their final standings did
not count.
-Warm weather also caused severe
problems with the ice, as some games
were re-scheduled to 7 a.m.
-Many games featured
double-digit scores,
showing the huge difference in strenth
between teams. Czech forward
Vladimir Zabrodsky alone scored 27 goals.
