Rangers have swooped to sign Fiorentina certral defender Lorenzo Amoruso for £4.5 million. The 25 year old arrived in Glasgow last night for signing talks. Amoruso is expected to sign a four year £16,000 per week contract today. The player is seen as a bit of a hard man in Italy and although he is only 5' 9" he is respected as one of the top man markers in Italian football.
Lorenzo Amoruso and Staale Stensaas signed for Rangers yesterday. Amoruso signed a five year contract and Stensaas pledged his future to the club for the next four years.
Amoruso signed for £3.95 million but revealed that Manchester Utd made a late bid to sign him but he had already said he would join Rangers. United offered Fiorentina £5.5 million for the player and Amoruso would have recieved £3,000 per week more than the £12,000 he will receive in Glasgow. Amoruso said, "I made an agreement with the Rangers chairman two days ago and I was happy to honour that. I wanted to keep my promise to the Rangers chairman because he is a real gentleman and a good person. He told me if I was not happy I was free to do whatever I wanted and I was under no obligation. But my word is important. Manchester Utd are a great club, but so are Rangers."
He continued, "I want to be a part of a new era at the club and a winner with Glasgow Rangers. Rangers want to be successful in Europe and so do I. I am a positive person in every situation I face so, sure I believe what I am saying. But I don't want to be the big star. I want to be an important member of a successful unit."
Amoruso will undergo an operation for a minor injury to his achilles tendon next week but should be fit for pre-season training which begins on 23 June.
