The club have also missed out on Inter defender Massimo Paganin. David Murray said, "Paganin was never our main target and we have now dropped our interest in him." The change of heart centres around the sudden availability of 28 year old Juventus star Sergio Porrini. Porrini is also a target for Manchester Utd but has expressed an interest in joining Lorenzo Amoruso at Ibrox.
Rangers last night appeared to have clinched the signing of Juventus defender Sergio Porrini for £4 million. 28 year old Porrini will sign a four year contract today after being told he no longer had a future at the Italian giants. The player has two caps for Italy and is rated as one of the best defenders in Italy.
Porrini said, "I am looking forward to a new adventure with Glasgow Rangers. I am sad to leave Juventus but all over Europe the market for players is changing. I would like to stay but I realise that this is not possible so I have to look abroad and Rangers are a very big club. I am not afraid to move to another country and I am looking forward to playing alongside Amoruso, who I know well and admire as a player."
The deal was set up by his agent Claudio D'amico who also represents Lorenzo Amoruso who joined Rangers last week for £3.95 million. D'amico said, "we have spoken to the Rangers president David Murray several times about Sergio coming to Glasgow and we hope to complete the talking tomorrow. Sergio is very keen to join Rangers because they are one of the biggest clubs in Europe. A very important factor is that Amoruso has already signed. Sergio speaks English quite well but having another Italian with him on and off the field is important to him."
Sergio Porrini became the second Italian in a week to snub Manchester Utd for Rangers. Porrini yesterday signed from Juventus for £3 million. His agent Andreas D'amico said, "Manchester Utd wanted Lorenzo Amoruso and when he signed for Rangers, their president Martin Edwards contacted me. He then wanted Sergio to sign a contract but Sergio wanted to come to Glasgow with Lorenzo. Parma also made a good offer but the football would have been no different for Sergio. He wanted to experience life and football in another country and he now has the chance to do this."
Porrini said, "I think Glasgow Rangers are a good team and I think we can win important competitions. I know players like Gascoigne, Laudrup, Thern and Bjorklund who have all played in Italy and, of course, I know Lorenzo Amoruso. I had two years remaining on my contract at Juventus and they did not want to sell me, but Rangers wanted me and my wife and I wanted to experience life in another country. I like the aura that is around Glasgow Rangers. It is like a family and there is great friendliness here. I played against them for Juve in the Champions League and my biggest memory is the Glasgow Rangers support. In Italy the support is not so passionate, here it is beautiful for a player."
