It was the forwards perfectly judged 40 yard pass that set Ian Wright free to beat Peruzzi for the opener. Then just prior to the
interval the Arsenal striker returned the compliment by setting Scholes up for an unstoppable drive from 15 yards. It was the
first goal for his country in only his second cap following his debut against South Africa 12 days ago.
"I enjoyed it." said Scholes after the match. "It was good experience for me and a bonus to get a goal. With a few more United
lads with me it has helped me to settle in."

Stylish and intelligent forward similar in many regards to the now retiredEric
Cantona. Was seen by many as a possible long term
replacement for him. He was limited in his number of
appearances in his 96-97 season due to the form of Cole and
Solskjaer, but had a great start to the 1995/96 campaign
and finished with 14 goals, 9 in his first 12 games. He has a very sharp eye for goal but possesses a
much wider variety to his game and enjoys dropping into a deeper attacking position behind
a frontman. Has a superb first touch and vision which creates space for other attackers.
Ended last season in great form for England in Le Tournoi de France - scoring
against Italy and also appearing against World Champions Brazil. With Cantona's departure
he may now be ready to fully establish himself in the Frenchman's place, a position which he
has proved more than capable of filling in the past.
A creator foremost, has a ice cool finish and is termed the "best" tackler of the club. Perhaps the best
all around player that United has produced so far. A really great player, England should have him as the
hole striker behind the front two. His partnership with Nicky Butt in the United midfield has been superb this season
and have been instrumental in minimising the effects of the long term injury to Roy Keane to United.
League Record for United:
Five Manchester United players made an appearance for England tonight for the meeting with Italy in Le Tournoi de France.
Beckham, Phil Neville and Paul Scholes all lined up the starting eleven, while Gary Neville and Andy Cole came on as second
half substitutes. All five played well but it was Paul Scholes who inspired his country to their 2:0 victory, setting up the first goal
and scoring the second all in the first half.
