With nicknames like : The Speed Marchant, Speedster, and
Speedy, there is no doubt that he can skate. Marchant shadows
the opponents' top
scoring lines, and generates scoring chances with his blazing speed.
Many in the industry agree that Marchant is one of the top defensive
forwards in the NHL. He is a key component to the
Oilers. He is a checker, and he contributes constantly and
consistantly. He is terrific at drawing penalties, effective at
penalty killing, and he still manages to score some goals. Marchant is
one of the few players in the NHL who can pick your pocket at the
red line, dump the puck in the offensive zone, and beat you to
the puck which is deep in the corner. He was called up from Cape
Breton midway into the 1994-95 season by the Oilers, and never
looked back. His speed and his heart for the game fit very well
with the dynamics of the Oilers. He may be small, but he is
fearless when he hits and battles at the end zones.
That is why his teammates call him the Mighty Mouse.
Marchant's most memoriable hockey moment is the overtime, breakaway
goal against the Dallas Stars in the 7th game of the
first round 1997 playoffs.
That goal completed one of the most thrilling playoff-upset in recent
NHL history.
