Sixth straight final berth

01 May 2006 - Shamrocks secured a berth in gaelic football’s Brisbane Shield final for the sixth consecutive year over the weekend.

The Shamrocks Green will play defending Shield champions John Mitchels for the senior mens trophy that Shamrocks have won four times in the past eight years. It will be Shamrocks’ eighth final appearance in nine years.

In the ladies division, Shamrocks missed a place in the Shield final when it lost to Souths over the weekend. Souths will play Harps in the ladies final.

Ironically, the only year since 1997 that Shamrocks did not contest the senior mens Brisbane Shield final was 2000 when it went on to win its most recent Queensland Championship.

Senior mens Brisbane Shield finals results for Shamrocks:

2005 – lost v Mitchels (by 2 points)
2004 – lost v Easts (by 10 points)
2003 – WON v Easts (by 2 points)
2002 – lost v Mitchels (by 5 points)
2001 – WON v Mitchels (by 7 points)
2000 – Souths beat someone
1999 – WON v Easts (by 3 points)
1998 – WON v Mitchels (by 6 points)

And who will ever forget 1998 when Shamrocks became the first (and only) club to win all three Brisbane Shield finals in the same year - a mighty night ensued.

Rookies leading the way

24 Apr 2006 - Young rookies are starring for Shamrocks as the western suburbs gaelic football club fills two of the top three places in the Brisbane Shield senior mens ladder.

Shamrocks Green beat Easts Celts over the weekend, while Shamrocks White lost to John Mitchels although 15-year-old Mitchell Bere scored his second goal in as many matches.

Dan Rodriguez made an outstanding pass to Bere to set up the goal, as both were among the best players, along with Indooroopilly’s Bodie Willmot and Cameron Thirlway.

The previous week Shamrocks Green broke a five-year-old record when it beat Harps by 48 points, smashing the previous team record margin of 39 points set against Souths back in 2001.

In the ladies Brisbane Shield, Shamrocks are in second place after three consecutive wins. They play Souths this Sunday at Willawong, with the winner likely to secure a place in the Brisbane Shield final.

Also this Sunday, Shamrocks Green and Shamrocks White face-off in the first of this year’s western derbies.

Shamrocks white hot into second place

2 Apr 2006 - Shamrocks broke three team records and jumped into second place with a convincing win in Gaelic football’s Brisbane Shield at Willawong over the weekend.

Justin Rees led the scoring with 1 goal 4 points, and best players were Wayne Gallagher, Aaran Miller and Jonny O’Neill, as Shamrocks White 5-17-32 beat Easts Celts 0-6-6.

Amongst the team records broken were the 32-point total and 25-point winning margin, eclipsing the marks set two years ago.

Also on the weekend, Shamrocks Green beat Sarsfields, and Shamrocks ladies defeated Easts Celts.

This weekend, Shamrocks White play Sarsfields and Shamrocks Green face Harps, both in a bid to consolidate places near the top of the Brisbane Shield standings. Shamrocks ladies also play Sarsfields.

Rookies play well in season opener

26 Mar 2006 - Good pre-season recruiting benefited Brisbane’s western suburbs Shamrocks club although it lost all three Gaelic football matches played at Willawong in the opening round of the Brisbane Shield over the weekend.

With so many new players, Shamrocks suffered from inexperience but encouragingly started the first competition of the year well against seasoned opposition.

In mens football, Shamrocks White 5-4 (19) with no Irish imports and first-gamer Dan Rodriquez scoring a cracker of a goal, narrowly lost to Harps 3-14 (23), while Shamrocks Green 1-5 (8) led by Matt Walsh at fullback, lost to John Mitchels 6-7 (25).

In the ladies match, World Cup winner Trish Brown scored two goals and was best as Shamrocks 3-1 (10) lost to Harps 5-9 (24).

This Sunday, Shamrocks Green play Sarsfields and Shamrocks White play Easts, while Shamrocks also face Easts in ladies football.

New players are always welcome.

Locals called to bolster Irish recruits

Irish recruits Colly McGrath and Jonny O’Neill from Clonoe, County Tyrone, with Shamrocks president Billy Rockett this week 13 Mar 2006 - The western suburbs’ Shamrocks gaelic football club goes into the final week of pre-season still needing more new local players to bolster a strong group of Irish imports.

The Shamrocks’ St Patricks Day celebrations at the Indooroopilly Pig ‘n’ Whistle this Friday, the annual Sports Day and nine-a-side matches on Sunday, followed immediately by the opening round of the Brisbane Shield on March 26, means that full rosters from the outset are a must.

Shamrocks boast a number of new players from across the western suburbs, as well as from Ireland, but more are needed.

The club’s mens, womens and under 18 players train at the Western Districts Sports Club, Chelmer, on Tuesday nights.
