The western suburbs Shamrocks Green team 1-15 (18) beat Souths 2-6 (12) for their second consecutive win, and in the process snapping Souths’ own four game winning streak.

Shamrocks jumped to an early lead 0-9 to 0-2 at the break, before withstanding a Souths second half revival.

Best for Shamrocks were defenders Dave McNeilly and Dave O’Malley, with forward Ciaran Conlon scoring three points.

Shane Gormley returned from injury to score 1-1.

Souths’ previous loss this season was back in May, also against Shamrocks.

This weekend Shamrocks Green play Harps, Shamrocks White face Easts, while in ladies football Shamrocks play John Mitchels.

Shamrocks bounce back

25 June 2006 - Shamrocks Green retained the lead in the Queensland Gaelic Football League with a dominant win over 2004 championship winners Easts Celts at Willawong over the weekend.

After back-to-back losses to second-placed John Mitchels, the western suburbs club bounced back with a 17-point win over Easts 5-15-30 to 3-4-13.

Eight Shamrocks scorers were led by Billy Rockett with a season high 2-2, and Shane Gibney 1-5. Best for Shamrocks were John Collins, Rockett, and Laurie Bere.

Sam Porter played in goals.

Shamrocks dominate early

Shamrocks left wondering what went wrong after it all went right early on 10 June 2006 - Shamrocks built the lead to win, but were left ruing a lost opportunity as the western suburbs Gaelic football team crashed to John Mitchels in the Brisbane Shield final for the second straight year at Willawong over the weekend.

John Mitchels 1-12 (15) defeated Shamrocks Green 1-8 (11), despite accurate frees from Shamrocks’ best player Cameron Carney who finished with three points, supported by Wayne Gallagher and Matt Mayo.

The showdown was Shamrocks’ sixth consecutive Brisbane Shield final, but lost for the third straight year, allowing John Mitchels to join Shamrocks as the only teams to win back-to-back senior Shield titles in Association history.

The early going was all Shamrocks as they consistently drove the ball in fast and high.

This dominance was typified early when goal keeper Johnny McErlean came off his line to expertly punch the ball clear, the ball was swiftly driven forward where full forward Gallagher took the ball overhead and scored.

A moment later the ball was again driven in high, Gallagher brought the ball to ground, where corner forward Justin Rees swooped and kicked the outstanding Shamrocks goal.

Shamrocks led by as much as 8 points 1-5 to nil before John Mitchels registered their first score. A pivotal moment came at about this time when Shamrocks captain and centre back Dave O’Malley limped off with a hamstring strain, but Shamrocks continued to lead 1-7 to 1-5 at half time.

They retained the lead until with just 8 minutes remaining, they were given a yellow card that led to John Mitchels kicking the tieing point. Momentum had shifted, and Mitchels went on to score the last six points of the match to win by four.

While Shamrocks were left ruing their third straight final loss, the team is still undefeated atop the Queensland League, in which Shamrocks and John Mitchels again do battle this weekend.

In the ladies competition, Souths beat Harps for their first ladies Brisbane Shield title, and so denying Harps a third consecutive title, and also the chance to break the record of four ladies Shield titles recorded by Shamrocks 1997-2000.
