Newsletter October 2000

In this issue:

Due to popular demand, in this edition I have chosen to include some information on how to claim awards and classifications. This is in a liftout form so that you can carry it in your equipment bag and refer to it as you need to.

I have also decided to do an article on how to work out your handicap rating. This information you can use in conjunction with the Archery Australia rule book within the club house. You will then be able to refer to the book when you need and keep track of your overall performance and set goals for your improvement.

This issue has a new look Question and Answer section. We will look at questions that you ask and offer you a solution to common problems.

The Maquarie Masters Games were held on the 7th and 8th of October ,...

Committee Meeting 20th August 2000

General Business

  • Gregory reported that the latest AA rule book has been copied for the club. The recorder will keep it for his use.
  • It was reported that the round foam test butt that we have been using has been deteriorating too quickly. The club is negotiating a price with the manufacturer for the replacement centres before we decide if it is worth our while to pursue this type of butt.
  • It was also reported that the square high density foam test butt has been very successful. The committee decided to purchase 3 more for use by the club.
  • The club has received promotional material from the Department of Sport and Recreation. This will be distributed to various libraries around the area.
  • The committee noticed the condition of the secretaries brief case and decided that a new one was in order. David to purchase a new one.
  • The secretary mentioned that she had looked at the constitution and found that U/12 archers were allowed to become members. The constitution states:
    • Membership Qualifications.
      (C) The person whilst is under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a responsible adult while shooting.
All U/12 records can now be officially accepted by the club.

Ratings, Handicaps and Allowances

A handicap rating is a value maintained by the clubs to calculate allowances, group archers of similar standard, and for individuals to check their progress. It is a value determined by using a series of reference tables for each round that is shot. The higher the value the more accurate the archer is said to be.

The allocation of an initial rating is obtained by averaging the appropriate ratings from the ratings tables for the first five rounds shot. The handicap value is taken to the nearest integer. This initial value then becomes the archers current handicap rating.

This value will go up as the archer improves and betters his/her rating. An archers handicap index will be adjusted when he/she shoots a round to a better standard than their existing handicap. It will be adjusted by half the improvement, unless the improvement figure is an odd number in which case the adjustment will be by the nearest whole number less than the improvement.

Example 1. John, a new member, shoots five rounds. His first five scores were: Canberra 488, Melbourne 520, Darwin 494, Geelong 751, Canberra 552. The handicap ratings are then calculated according to the ratings tables: 35, 38, 26, 45 and 41 respectively. These ratings are averaged to obtain an initial value of 37. John now shoots a Geelong and scores 723, which is calculated to be a rating of 40. His handicap now goes up by 1 because 40-37=3, half of 3 is 1.5 and not a whole number, the closest whole number lower is hence 1. Therefore his rating goes up to 38.

Once an archer has a handicap rating, the value can then be used to determine the allowance for a particular round. This is the difference between the possible score and the archer’s expected performance. This allowance would be added to the archer’s actual score in a handicap event.

Example 2. John is entering a Canberra handicap event. His current handicap rating is 38. For this event his allowance is worked out to be 380. This is calculated as follows; John’s expected score is 520, (found by looking at the ratings tables) and the maximum score for a Canberra is 900. 900-520=380. He shoots 512 in the event which gives him a corrected overall score of 892. 512+380=892

Handicap ratings are a great way compare yourself to other archers. This is because no matter what round other archers are shooting, there is a corresponding rating for each and this can be cross referenced and compared for all rounds.

Handicap ratings can also be used to set goals for yourself. You can look at the tables before shooting and determine what score you will need to shoot to achieve a better rating, even down to the score needed for each arrow.

The club has a copy of these ratings tables for all archers to look at. They are found within the Archery Australia rule book which can be found in the club house on the table. So now you have no excuse. Check your ratings and watch your improvement or compare yourself to other archers abilities.

What better way to keep tab on your performance than to check your ratings.

Extracts from the AA rule book.
Gregory Rowell

"The Answers"

Q: What's a Birun?

A: A Birun is a small pin in a collar fitted to the string. It’s used instead of a nock.

Q: What's a Bowshot?

A: A Bowshot is the extreme distance a bow can be shot.

Questions and Answer Time

Q: My arrows are “porpoising” on their way to the target (the back of the arrow moves up and down). What does this mean?

A: This is an indication that the nocking point on the bow is incorrect. It could be either too high or too low. Check your nocking point and then either adjust your nocking point up or down in minute amounts until you have corrected the problem. Also check your finger position on the string to see if you are pressing on the arrow upon release.

Q: I have adjusted my nocking point but my arrows are still “porpoising”. What should I do now?

A: If you have adjusted your nocking point but still can’t find an solution, it may be because of your release or your arrows may be hitting some part of the bow. You can check this by spraying a small amount of foot spray (commonly used for tinea) on the bow and then shooting a few arrows. If there is a trail or mark on the bow this could mean that your arrows are hitting the bow. Talk to a more experienced archer or coach for some advice if you are having this trouble as there is several solutions.

Q: I am a recurve shooter and I find that I quite often shoot an arrow off to the left. Why is this happening?

A: Firstly I assume that you are a right handed archer. There are several reasons that this could be happening. Occasionally shooting erratic arrows is generally caused by inconsistent form, work on your form so that it becomes more consistent. Check where your release hand is after you have shot your arrow. Is it still near your face or is it behind your neck. If it is still near your face then you may find that you are not using your back muscles to shoot your arrows and your release hand is remaining stationary upon release. This will cause your hand to break away and pull the string to the right and away from the face, and hence shoot to the left. Have a coach watch you and see if he can help with your form. If you mark these arrows and find that it is the same arrow all of the time, you may find there to be a problem with that arrow. Similarly if a coach says that your form is quite good your should check your arrows and equipment in the flight path more thoroughly for problems. This applies for both compound and recurve archers and equipment.
