10-31-97 (Cleveland Cavaliers)- Matt shot the Rockets first 3-pointer in the season opener against Cleveland at the newly named Compaq Center. That meant he broke a Rockets franchise record of having at least 1 3-pointer in 23 consecutive games, the record held by Sleepy Floyd. Matt tied the game at the end of last season but had to wait till this season to break it and of course, he did. I knew he would. Matt had a great game and finally the dilemna of who would start was over as Matt was in the starting line-up again as he was all of last season. Although Brent and Matt equally shared the minutes in the game. Matt played the 1st and 3rd while Brent came off the bench for the 2nd and to finish the game in the 4th. Matt had 10 points for the night, played 24 minutes (as did Price), was 3-6 from the floor and 2-5 from 3-point range, made 2 free-throws, had 4 defensive rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and no turnovers. It was a solid performance and a good way to start the season.
ROCKETS 94 CAVALIERS 86
11-02-97 (at Sacramento Kings)- Matt would extend the new record he broke in the season opener to 25 games as he launched 3 3-pointers (out of 7 tries) for his 9 points for the night. His streak would end at this game though. Matt was 3-9 from the field, had 1 assist and played 23 minutes.
ROCKETS 93 KINGS 77
11-18-97 (New York Knicks)- Michael Murphy from the Houston Chronicle reports Maloney Strikes early, often! In which Matt had arguably his best game of the season as he started out red hot and finishing the same way. Ending with 23 points, 4 3-pointers (out of 7 tries), 2 assists, 2 steals, was a sizzling 11-13 from the free-throw line and played 34 minutes a new season high for Matt.
ROCKETS 95 KNICKS 84
11-28-97 (At Portland TrailBlazers)- The Rockets first meeting at the Compaq Center against Portland was a devastating 1 point loss. But in the second meeting on the Blazers court the Rockets would return the favor and add this victory to a winning streak of 4 games. Maloney played 20 minutes and was 1-3 from 3-point land. He had 2 drives to the basket to give him 7 points for the night. He had 2 defensive rebounds, dished out 2 assists, had 1 steal, only 1 foul and no turnovers.
ROCKETS 98 BLAZERS 89
11-29-97 (At Golden State Warriors)- The Rockets would extend their W streak to 5 games in which Barkley scored an amazing 43 points and led a 27-0 scoring blitz to launch an amazing comeback from a 18 point deficit and take the win. Matt played extremely well and posted 8 points for the night. He played for 33 minutes, was 2-5 from the 3-point line and made 2 feebies. He had 1 defensive rebound, and 2 assists with only 1 foul and turnover.
ROCKETS 107 WARRIORS 100
12-06-97 (At Mexico City vs. Dallas Mavericks)- The Rockets would travel south of the border for the first ever NBA regular season game held in Mexico to face the Dallas Mavericks. Technically this was a Dallas home game but there was no doubt who the crowd was rooting for...Sir Charles and the Rockets. He was a huge hit with the Mexican audience and he played that to his advantage as only the Chuckster can. This was also a special day for Matt as it was his 26th birthday and he played a very solid game to celebrate it. With Brent Price out for the last 3 games with back spasms, Matt has been seeing more minutes. He played for a total of 27 minutes, and was 4-5 from the 3-point line, scoring his 12 points for the night in the first half. He made 2 assists, had 3 defensive rebounds along with 2 turnovers and just 2 fouls. This would be the Rockets 8th win in a row, but this game almost got away. The Rockets were up by 8 points with just 19.3 left on the clock but the Mavs put on a run, with a little help from the Rockets....meaning they were making some really stupid mistakes. Dallas pulled within 2 and had the ball with 3.1 left but on an inbound pass Elie got a piece of it and Barkley came away with it as the buzzer sounded. The Rockets dodged a bullet....and Barkley in his enthusiasm, threw his shoes and the game ball into the crowd. The fans went nuts....What a game!

12-09-97 (San Antonio Spurs)- Matt Maloney has been 8-9 from the 3-point line for the last 2 games. Matt was a perfect 4-4 from 3-land and he only took 4 shots, for his 12 points of the game, when the Rockets polverized the San Antonio Spurs 108-78 extending our winning streak to 9, tieing our longest winning streak from last season. Maloney played 21 minutes, had 2 defensive rebounds, dished out 2 assists, had zero turnovers and just 1 foul.
ROCKETS 108 SPURS 78
12-12-97 (At LA Lakers)- Matt Maloney started his 100th game in a row against the Lakers, placing him in the Top 10 in the NBA for most consecutive starts in 9th place. Eddie Sefko from the Houston Chronicle reports that Matt has "entrenched himself as the Rockets' iron man." in his article Maloney lifts streak to 100 starts in a row. Unfortunately, this was about the only good news from this game as the Rockets saw a 9 game winning streak end.
LAKERS 119 ROCKETS 102
12-16-97 (Vancouver Grizzlies)- In back to back games against Vancouver, the first on their court, the Grizzlies would come away with the win in the first game. But not in the Rockets' house, 2 days later the Rockets seeked redemption and then wanted to rub it in a little with a 118 to 91 win to break a 2 game losing streak. Matt played a great game, he scored 14 points and played for 31 minutes. He was 6-11 from the floor and 2-3 from 3-land. He also yanked down 5 rebounds, 2 offensive, which is a new Season High for Matt. He dished out 4 assists, had 2 steals, zero turnovers and just 2 fouls. I loved how the Press-row box put it "Seeing Matt juke and shuke Abdur-Rahim and then bury the 21-foot jumper to end the 3rd quarter was the highlight of the game." It sure was!
ROCKETS 118 VANCOUVER 91
12-19-97 (At San Antonio Spurs)- This was a much closer game than I had anticipated and Drexler getting ejected in the first with 2 technicals didn't help because our bench was limited already by injuries. The game stayed very close until the Rockets broke loose. As Matt put it "We good got a good rhythm, especially in the 4th quarter." The Rockets outscored the Kings by 16 points in the 4th (37-21). Matt played a good game. He played for 24 minutes and had 13 points being 5-9 from the field and 3-7 from the 3-point arc. He had 2 assists, 2 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 turnover and no fouls.
ROCKETS 116 SACRAMENTO 98
