Sligo Rovers 3-4 St. Patrick's Athletic

The Rovers Rovers' nine match unbeaten start came to an abrupt halt against Pats. Hero for the Saints was former Sligo forward Ian Gilzean. He scored a hat-trick in his first game back at the Showgrounds. He scored his first goal after only 10 minutes. Trevor Molloy's cross found him unmarked six yards out and his firm header found Westhead's goal. Three minutes later Eddie Gormley doubled Pats. lead with a superb shot from twenty yards.
Lee Thew pulled one back for the Reds with a header from Neil Ogden's corner on the 24th minute. Gilzean restored Pats two goal lead two minutes later, Molloy played the ball back to Paul Osam and his cross was firmly dispatched to the net. He got his hat-trick when he pounced on a loose ball in the Sligo box on the 67th minute. Rovers rallied strongly showing brave battling qualities. Padraig Moran pulled one back scoring from a Steve Jones cross. Near the end substitute Steve Berks made it 4-3 to leave the scoreline looking a bit more respectable.
Gilzean must have been a pleased man after being released by strugglers Drogheda United because he failed to impress on a months trial, he then signed during the week for Pats.

Rovers: Westhead, Cubbesson, Lynch, Daly, Hutchinson, Jones, Thew, Reid, Ogden, Rose, Moran. Subs. Flannery for Rose (55 Mins.) and Berks for Ogden (78 Mins.)
