1970/71 First Division: 8th. Fa Cup: Third Round. League Cup: Semi-Final.
A disappointing season which sees Wilf McGuinness demoted.
1971/72 First Division: 8th. FA Cup: Sixth Round. League Cup: Fourth Round.
Frank O'Farrell is appointed manager and Sir Matt Busby joins the Board of Directors. 
Stoke City eliminate United from both domestic cups. Martin Buchan signs from Aberdeen 
and Ian Storey-Moore from Nottingham Forest for £200,000.
1972/73 First Division: 18th. FA Cup: Third Round. League Cup: Third Round.
A gloomy season which sees Frack O'Farrell dismissed in December in favour of Tommy 
Docherty. New arrivals include Ted MacDougall (Bournemouth), Wyn Davies (Manchester 
City), Alex Forsyth (Partick Thistle), Jim Holton (Shrewsbury Town), George Graham (Arsenal) 
and Lou Macari (Celtic). However, MacDougall moves to West Ham United after just six 
months at the club. Both George Best and Bobby Charlton announce their retirements 
whilst Denis Law rejoins Manchester City.
1973/74 First Division: 21st (relegated). FA Cup: Fourth Round. League Cup: Second Round.
United are relegated for the first time since 1937. Paddy Roche moves from Shelbourne, 
Stewart Houston from Brentford and Jim McCalliog from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
1974/75 Second Division: Champions. FA Cup: Third Round. League Cup: Semi-Final.
United storm back to the top flight winning the Second Division title with sixty one points. 
Stuart Pearson signs from Hull City for £200,000 and Steve Coppell arrives from Tranmere 
Rovers.
1975/76 First Division: 3rd. FA Cup: Finalists. League Cup: Fourth Round.
Second Division Southampton spring a big surprise when they beat United 1-0 at 
Wembley to lift the FA Cup. Millwall's Gordon Hill moves to United.
1976/77 First Division: 6th. FA Cup: Winners. League Cup: Fifth Round. UEFA Cup: Second Round.
United ends Liverpool's hopes of the 'treble' by winning the FA Cup Final 2-1. Italian giants 
Juventus end United's UEFA Cup ambitions with a 3-1 aggregate victory. Jimmy Greenhoff signs 
for United from Stoke City and, at the end of the season, Dave Sexton replaces Tommy 
Docherty as manager. The club's record transfer fee recieved is equalled when Gerry 
Daly moves to Derby County in April for £170,000.
1977/78 First Division: 10th. FA Cup: Fourth Round. League Cup: Second Round. European Cup 
Winners' Cup: Second Round.
The Charity Shield is shared when United and Liverpool play out a 0-0 draw. The latest 
'sortie' into Europe ends in a 6-5 aggregate defeat by FC Porto of Portugal. United set 
a new record transfer between British clubs by signing Gordon McQueen from Leeds United 
for £500,000. This follows the earlier move by Joe Jordan, also from Elland Road, for 
£350,000. A record fee is recieved from Derby County for Gordon Hill £250,000.
1978/79 First Division: 9th. FA Cup: Finalists. League Cup: Third Round. 
United's centenary season gets under way with a 4-0 win against Real Madrid, watched by 
almost 50,000. There is disappointment at the end of the campaign when United lose a 
sensational FA Cup Final to Arsenal. Three of the five goals are scored in the last five 
minutes as United lose 3-2. Mickey Thomas signs from Wrexham for £300,000.
1979/80 First Division: 2nd. FA Cup: Third Round. League Cup: Third Round.
The season begins with United paying and receiving record club transfer fees. 
Ray Wilkins moves from Chelsea for £825,000 and Brian Greenhoff goes to Leeds United 
for £350,000.
