The Singapore Open starts today. JM is the no. 4 seed, and won a place in the second round with a 6-1 6-2 straights set win over compatriot Jonathan Stark.
Thursday 8th October 1998
JM had to retire from his second round match against the Australian Michael Tebutt today, because of a back injury. He was trailing by 5-0 when JM decided to pull out.

JM and his doubles partner, Paul Haarhuis of the Netherlands were knocked out of th tournament by Sjeng Schalken and John van Lottum also of the Netherlands 6-4 5-7 6-3.

JM is the 3rd seed at the $340,000 Shanghai Open tennis tournament which begins today.
Jan Michael Gambill beat Zhang Yu (China) 6-4 6-3 to advance to the second round.

JM lost in 5 sets to Carlos Moya today. In a match which either player could have won, JM, the crowd favourite, having held a 4-2 lead in the deciding set, lost 2-6 6-3 6-3 3-6 6-7 (4-7). The US Open is the only grand slam to have a tie break in the deciding set. This time, it was not to JM's advantage, but there's always next year! =o)

JM won a place in the third round in front of his home crowd today with a 4 sets win over Magnus Norman. He won 6-4 2-6 7-6 (10-8) 6-3. He will be playing the winner of the match between Carlos Moya and Michael Chang.
JM will be playing Carlos Moya in round 4, as he outlasted Michael Chang in 5 long sets. A match which finished 3 hours after the stepped on court, and at around 1:30 in the morning. Hopefully, this will mean Carlos is tired when playing JM. =o)

JM won his first round match at the US Open today, defeating Karsten Braasch of Germany 6-3 1-6 6-3 7-5. His next opponent will be Magnus Norman of Sweden.

JM defeated Nicolas Escude of France 6-3 6-2 today in his first round match at the Du Maurier Open held in Toronto in Canada.

Andre Agassi won the Mercedes-Benz Cup today with a straight sets win over Britain's Tim Henman. It's a consolation for JM to lose to the eventual winner in a tournament don't you think?

Jan-Michael lost to Andre Agassi in straight sets today. Andre was just in too good a form, beating Jan-Michael 6-4 6-4.
Monday 27th July 1998
Jan-Michael beat his fellow American, Steve Campbell in the first round of the Mercedes-Benz Cup today in straight sets. The score: 6-4 6-4. His next opponent will be Andre Agassi, the number 5 seed. Someone Jan-Michael has beaten before!

Jan-Michael lost his bid for a match-up against Tim Henman, when he lost to Byron Black in straight sets 5-7 4-6 5-7.
Wednesday 24th June 1998
Jan-Michael eventually won his first round match today. It took him five sets and three days to complete due to bad light, and rain stopping play on Monday and Tuesday respectively. Jan-Michael now faces Byron Black from Zimbabwe. If he wins that match tomorrow, he may face Tim Henman, the British #2, who is also seeded.

The Wimbledon Championships begin today. Jan-Michael is playing his first round match today. It is a tough opener, against Sjeng Schalken of Holland. Potential opponents are Byron Black in the second round and Tim Henman in the third round, both players Jan-Michael has beaten earlier in the year.
