Development of Combat Aikido in the Philippines
Combat Aikido was developed by Master Monching J. Gavileno as the most effective martial art of self-defense. It teaches easy-to-learn combative techniques which practitioners of the art can employ to neutralize their opponent.
With the use of locking techniques, the Combat Aikido expert can pin his opponent down on the ground. The student can even break the limbs of his opponents with the same techniques. However, this is seldom done because a Combat Aikido practitioner is disciplined not to cause unnecessary harm to his opponent. He is rather taught how to simply disarm, control or stop the aggressive attack of his opponent.
The modified techniques of Combat Aikido were primarily designed by Master Gavileno to cope with any form of assault in the streets. Like any form of martial art, it is the primary goal of Combat Aikido to enable it's practitioner to defend himself against any assailant especially in street fighting. Therefore, it teaches only those techniques which have actually been proven to be effective in Combat and discard those which have been found to be ineffective.
Combat Aikido as innovated by Master Gavileno is a modified modern version of Aikido which had its origins in ancient Japan. Early in the 6th century A.D. a certain Prince Teijun in Aizu Province, Japan, originated a fighting system which was further developed in the 12th century by Yoshimitsu Minomoto and henceforth known as Daito Ryu Aikijutsu. Neglected for almost seven centuries, it was only in the 20th century that one Sokaku Takeda revived the study of the said martial art and taught it to Moriehi Uyeshiba who in turn modified the system and named it "Aikido" sometime in 1942. From that time on, Aikido spread like wildfire around the world and reached the Philippine shores in the 1960's. Master Gavileno was lucky enough to be one of the very first students who were taught the new martial art. Through the years since as an effective art of self-defense in actual street fighting and readily called it Combat Aikido.
