A commedia play (called a canovacci) can be mild and vapid or perverse and gross -- as long as it's funny. Each play has a loose structure allowing the actors plenty of room to improvise. Although the structure of each scene is predetermined, the dialogue and blocking for the actors is not. This allows immense artistic freedom and the ability to interact with the audience.

SAMPLE CANOVACCI

Il Capitano enters bragging about his sexual prowess and strength in battle. He calls Zanni on stage and informs Zanni that he has heard that a rich widow has come to town. Wishing to seduce her into marriage, Il Capitano tells Zanni that he must find out where she lives. Zanni understands and Il Capitano exits.

Enter the lover, Flavio. He moans how he needs to find the right lover. He sees Zanni and instucts him to find an appropriate woman for him so that he may serenade her. Zanni agrees. Exit Flavio.

Enter, Diamantina (the character is a promiscuous nymphomaniac). Diamantina flirts with Zanni. Zanni ignores her as best he can and tells her about Flavio. Diamantina tells Zanni to tell Flavio to meet her at her house that night. Exit Diamantina.

Enter Isabella (the character is very emotional and flowery). Zanni tells her about Il Capitano. Isabella tells Zanni to send him over to her house later that night. Exit Isabella.

Enter Il Capitano. He asks Zanni if the woman has been found. Zanni says yes and leads him to Isabella's house. Il Capitano enters her house (by disappearing behind the curtain). Isabella kicks him out, laughing. Il Capitano recovers by telling Zanni that he was too overwhelming in his seductive powers and she got confused. Il Capitano instructs Zanni to compose a serenade for Il Capitano to perform to her that evening. Exit Il Capitano and Zanni.

Enter Diamantina and Isabella. Diamantina says how disgusted she was with Flavio. She found him to be a flowery little, effeminate angel. Isabella says that he sounds perfect and says how disgusted she was with Il Capitano. She found him to be too thuggish and boastful. Diamantina likes that. They decide to switch houses because they are attracted to the opposite man. Exit Diamantina and Isabella.

Enter Capitano, Flavio and Zanni. Il Capitano and Flavio do not know that the other is there. They primp and begin to seperately serenade each side of the curtain (that being where the two ladies' houses are). Il Capitano and Flavio think that they hear each other, but Zanni assures each other that it just an echo. Diamantina emerges from Il Capitano's side and starts rubbing all over him. Il Capitano freaks out and runs off stage, terrified of her sexuality. Isabella emerges and meets up with Flavio. Happily, they walk to the front of the stage. Diamantina sees Zanni and they walk happily to the front of the stage. Enter Il Capitano who sees them. He wilts.
