February 4th, 2005 - Happiness vs. Joy

Money can buy you happiness. When you have more money, you can buy more, do more, get things for the people you love. You won't stress about not having money. You'll be happy... some of the time. Friends can bring you happiness. Love, good food, a really great movie, are all things that bring happiness.
This would all be totally fine, if happiness were the issue, but it's not. It's not happiness that we usually lack, it's joy. Happiness is usually based on happenings, whereas joy, true joy, can only come from one place: Christ. Joy is knowing that even when you have no money at all, Christ considers you worth his time and investment. Jow is knowing that even though you don't have any food, Christ cares deeply about you and has a plan for you. Joy is knowing that Christ died for you, rose for you, lives for you, and loves you, no matter what situation of life you are in.
God has a purpose for every thing. Sometimes He may need you to go through a tough time, where happiness is very hard to find. Maybe God needs you to be sad. But He always wants us to have Joy because of what He has done for us. When we fully trust in Him, in every situation both good, and especially bad, we will find joy, hope, rest, and satisfaction.

Instead of focusing on what brings you happiness, think about this: Do you have joy?
Happiness comes and goes, but joy, the joy that Christ gives, is eternal.
