Hi Anne,
I am in your 1013CTL Tutorial Group X . Just in relation to Topic 2 and what you were saying in class.
I have re-read over my contributions and it is a general overview of my belief and is just why I agree (as in evidence) and then goes on to talk about New Basics. I wrote the 600 words and split them up into three contributions. You were saying we more had to focus to mulitculturalism and socialisation...? Is it alright for me to leave my contributions being the general overview and in my responses go specific and detail things like multiculturalism?? Thanks for your help. A Student

Hi A Student,

You need to learn to decide for yourself - Have you answered the topic?  Have you addressed the criteria? The topic has several parts.  Have you addressed them all?  Have you planned your ideas to achieve this?  You should use the responses as part of your organised ideas to answer the topic, while still engaging with others- a sort of intellectual discussion. In other, words, the responses are not an add-on.  They should be part of your argument.

Issues such as multiculturalism relate to the part of the topic that discusses the "needs of society at the time." The organization of your ideas should be guided by the topic and criteria. Be wary of discussing "only" the New Basics.  This is not the only curriculum change being implemented by Education QLD.  However, the topic clearly indicates that discussion of productive pedagogies should be part of the second part of the answer.

You were probably after a yes or no answer.  There isn't one.  Be guided by the topic and the criteria.  This is part of the challenge of the task, Cheerio, Anne     Click here for more student queries

Hint 1- Townsend (Reading 1.1) is a good place to start for the first part of the topic.  Boston (Reading 2.4) discusses many of the particular needs of our society in relation to schools.

Hint 2- When you ask questions in your assignment, the quality is very important.   For example, in assignment 1, a good question might have been, "If funding was available to increase retention and achievement, would it be best spent on incentives for male teachers, on reducing class sizes, or on improving the quality of teachers?  Discussion on these issues could have revealed great insight.  Don't just ask the question; you need to explore the issues the question raises.

Hint 3- Here is an education assignment which shows how referencing should be done. http://www4.gu.edu.au/arts/assignwri/mod3.html

Here is the verse that was referred to in discussions with Group 9.  ---Author Unknown

I dreamed I stood in a studio
And watched two sculptors there,
They clay they used was a young child’s mind
And they fashioned it with care.
One was a teacher; the tools he used
were books, music, and art.
One, a parent, who worked with a guiding
hand and a gentle heart.
Day after day the teacher toiled,
with touch that was deft and sure,
While the parent labored by his side,
And polished and smoothed it O’er.

And when, at last, their task was done,
They were proud of what they had wrought,
For the things they had molded into a child,
Could neither be sold nor bought.
For each agreed that he would have failed
If he had worked alone.
For behind the teacher stood the school,
And behind the parent, the home.

Classwork Tutorial 6

Assignment 2                                         Plans & other assignment skills click here

There is no tutorial the week Topic 2 is due.  It can be submitted at Tutorial 6 or in Box 12, in the Social Science Building (M10) by Thursday April17, 5pm, as stated in the Study Guide p8.  Please put your name and group on the front of the criteria sheet.  ( Extra criteria sheets can be printed from the Official course website from the Assessment link).  Do not use slip covers.

Refer to feedback on Assignment 1 to help with Assignment 2.  See Tutorial 2,   Tutorial 4 and Tutorial 5 and The Quiz

Assignments/Exam on Topics 3 and 4

You do not have to post these to the forum, but anything you do post to these forums can be taken into the exam, so posting is a good idea.  You can also take in an annotated reference list.  This is a reference list with a brief description of what is in the reference- more on what is acceptable later.  Check future Tutorial pages on this site for details.

Classwork

Groups will be engaged in a variety of activities.  Some will be working on questionning techniques as discussed in class last week.  Other groups have requested help with writing (will relate to Study Guide p21, task 3) and referencing.

We will all be looking at the Study Guide p21.  We will working on Task 1 in a Gallery Walk activity to wake us up and develop some critical thinking.  Then we will do a Jigsaw activity based on Townsend's article to help with planning skills.

Tutorial 7.  Please ensure you prepare for Task 5  by reading Townsend (Reading 1.1) again, Weber (Reading 2.2) and Edgar (Study Guide p24).  See page 24 of the Study Guide for more information.

More Student Queries

Hi Anne,
I'm just wondering if it's ok to address the first part of the question (i.e the needs of society) in three threads without referring to curriculum changes. That way, i am just highlighting the changes that have taken place
over time. Then in the second half address different issues, this time noting changes being made to the curriculum.  I hope that isn't too confusing.

Thanks for your help, Another Student

Dear Another Student,

This concept of organization is fine so long as you address the topic and the criteria.  If you use responses to answer the second part, make sure you do "engage" with the other person.  Comment on their ideas and how your ideas relate to theirs (this can be done concisely).

Have you looked at the website, http://au.oocities.com/ctl1013aw/index.htm especially Tutorial 6 which has an answer to another student's query about the assignment? Also look at the comments on your last assignment and feedback on my site above, especially Tutorials 2, 4 and 5 and The Quiz.  Make sure you have a plan that covers the whole topic.  While it is not necessary to have a full introduction and conclusion, organising sentences help the reader to follow how you are answering the topic. Check your ideas are shown to be based on research.

Reading other students' postings on the forum may also be helpful,

Cheerio, Anne
