William NICHOLSON of Askham, County of Northumberland & Ann HEWITSON - we do have proof "our" Aussie ancestor William N is from this Askham parish - -the sketch of Lowther Castle with note on the back "where my grandfather grew up" . but he was not necessarily born there and we dont actually know who wrote this.
Askham is just few miles south of Penrith slightly east.

The third photo is of Concession 5 Lot 16 Southeast 1/4 (50 acres),
Moore Township which belonged to Joseph Nicholson. He received title
to the property, from the Crown, in September 1862. The photo
is taken from the south east corner of the property looking north/northwest.
We were standing on the corner of Kimball Road and Courtright
Line. The house and barns in the photo are too recent to have
been the Joseph's homestead.
After the death of Joseph Nicholson, his property came into the hands
(either by will or sale ) of another Joseph Nicholson. He appears on the
Canadian Census of 1871 and 1881. He was unmarried, born in England,
about 1814-1815, and a farmer. He died January 25, 1890 in Moore Township
of La Grippe and old age.No other information on who he was but
he could be the son of Solomon Nicholson (who was Joseph
Nicholson's half brother). Solomon, and his wife Mary, had a
son Joseph, baptized January 20, 1816, in Lazonby.
Joseph Nichoson and his wife Isabella Ellwood had 6 chn. all born Cumbria England:
1 Mary Ann NICHOLSON b 21 Feb 1823

Westmoreland, England ,

JACKSON
d 31 March 1918 Lambton County Canada.
In August 1852 one
William Nicholson arrived in Port Phillip Bay by sailing ship "Fanny"
from British Port, and was aged 29. William met his
brother Joseph Nicholson who on arrived in Geelong -family. [This is the
only entry for a William Nicholson of the right age.- see PRO web site
index of unassisted passengers from British and foreign Port 1852 - 1899.]
Between Census 1861
[ June?] above- when he was in Penrith and 1862 they
migrated to Moore Township, Lambton County, Ontario, Canada from Cumberland,
England.
William went in 1852 when
the gold fever struck in Australia. After seven years he returned to England.
In 1862 he left England with
his wife & child to join his father in Moore Twp., Lambton Cty.
The date he received his
grant for Lot 15 Con. 5 Moore Twp. was 18 Oct 1862.
His father having come
10 years before.
In 1883 William & Jane
spent 3 months in England on a visit.
He was appointed as postmaster
in Kimball, Moore Twp.
He died from face cancer
& heart failure. [Thanks to Ruth of Canada]
The
following excerpt from a book on Lambton County Printed 1906- thanks to
Liz E. who is researching Joseph Ellwood who settled in Moore
Township sometime between 1833 and 1837. He was born in Cumberland
(maybe Carlisle or maybe Penrith ?) in 1799 or 1800, England, married
Mary Cameron and had a daughter Mary before coming to Canada. The Ellwood
family and the Nicholson family of Lambton County have long acknowledged
a family kinship through Joseph and Isabella Nicholson.
Many
thanks Liz!

taken from the northeast corner of the property looking southwest.
The older red brick farmhouse on the property probably not old enough to
have been Henry's.The brick house was built in the latter part of the 19th
