CHURCH RECORDS for Westmorland EXTANT HERE  ASKHAM

Now  since finding  all this ab out Nicholsons in  ASKHAM parish it is remembered by JGN,  in  2002  that " we have a  family memory of a drawing belonging to Ballarat Nicholsons"  of Lowther Castle, [4 miles south of Penrith] Westmorland  [history here] with inscription on back

"this is where my grand father grew  up"  - it is not known who wrote this on the backk of the Castle sketch. JGN has  but perhaps probably  Joseph Nicholson born 1830.

[Askham parish was taken over by the Lowther Hall parish]

This sketch and its  inscription  lends credence to this above William NICHOLSON being an  ancestor of the Nicholsosns of Ballarat and Moore Township  Canda.and  Michigan USA.

"Lowther Castle
Lowther Castle has been the family seat of the Earls of Lonsdale from  the site of mansions dating back to the reign of    Edward I. The present building was started in 1806, for  the   fifth Earl, to designs by Sir Robert Smirke. Lowther Castle.  The castle was well known for its wide range of activities and entertainment of       distinguished guests. After the death of the fifth Earl of Lonsdale,  the Castle was abandoned, the interior was dismantled and only the walls left   standing as a memorial to past glories.
Within the estate is 'The Lowther Oak', which accoring to ancient folklore  is   responsible for the good fortune of the Lonsdales. Bad luck will be bestowed on  the family if a branch of the oak touches the ground. The branch is propped  up to prevent this!
A public road passes through the estate from Askham to  Lowther Newtown, passing St Michael's Church which is opposite the front of the    Castle. Inside the Church are various memorials to members of the Lowther    family.

Sir Robert Smirke also designed St Peter's Church in nearby Askham.

So we are now looking for any records of ASKHAM parish and round about in   1760s- that are not on the  IGI

Lowther Castle photo 2007  by Sheila B.  of  England.
Sheila's  ancestor,  Isabella Carruthers  worked there when Lord Lonsdale lived there.  Isabella Carruthers from Askham lived till she was ninety two. She was able to tell  all about her years in Askham in service to Lord Lonsdale. The place is very beautiful - the drive to the village of Askham is through beautiful green parkland.   Isabella  had a great grandmother on her fathers side,  Isabella HARKER (nee Nicholson) [ Isabella Nicholson born estimated by me,-Liz of  approx. 1800 ] from Kirkland Westmorland.

Matthew HARKER  m. Isabella NICHOLSON  in 1817 at Crosthwaite Parish Church Keswick.

They had a large family:
Their eldest daughter Ann  Carruthers (nee Harker) was working  at a farm in Watendlath a hamlet in Borrowdale around 1841. The farmhouse was used by the author Hugh Walpole for the heroine of his book Judith Paris the second of the trilogy The Herries Chronicles. The story  was set just before Ann would have worked there but the descriptions of the area and the people who lived at that time are fantastic. Well worth a read for anyone researching family in the Lakes.

Fold Head Farm  (formerly Watendlath Farm) [ Watendlath is about 15 miles West of Askham ]

Many thanks to Sheila B for the above beautiful photos of the  area.taken 2007
