Biography

Donald McCollin 1845-1906

Donald's address in 1871 was given as 46 Leonard Street, i.e., next door to his parents. In the Census of 1881 Donald was described as an unemployed engineer's clerk . His home was 111 St Paul's Street, Hull. In the trade directories Donald was described as a greengrocer in 1882 (also the trade of his eldest son, William Herbert - but see below) and as a pigeon dealer of 23 Chiltern Street, Newington, Hull, in 1889. Two of Donald's children, Henrietta A., and William H., were recorded as staying with the their grandparents in Leonard Street in 1881 (although their ages are the wrong way around). Three years later Henrietta died, tragically young at 16, of consumption (tuberculosis). The informant was William, her grandfather, which suggests that she was still living in Leonard Street at the time of her death. In the 1891 Census Donald and Elizabeth were at 13 Victoria Avenue, Chalk Lane and Donald was described as an engineer. They had Rose Emily (10), Arthur (7) and Percival (5) living with them. In the same Census their eldest son, William H., was living with his new wife, Jennie, at 10 Ebenezer Terrace and making a living as a 'confectioner'. In the 1901 Census Donald and Elizabeth were at 39 Charlotte Street with Arthur (aged 17) (a printer) and Percival (aged 16) (a printer errand boy). Donald died in the Asylum at Willerby in 1906.
