OLYMPICS: On 8 September 1997,
the International Olympic Committee (IOC)
announced that it had granted outright recognition to the International
Dance Sport Federation (IDSF) as a 'Recognised Federation' and full member
of the IOC. This grant of full membership is a major achievement for IDSF
and DanceSport (competitive ballroom dancing) and is the culmination of
six years' hard work by IDSFs negotiating committee, more than two year's
qualification by IDSF as a Provisional Member of the IOC, and a tremendous
effort by national DanceSport federations and their hundreds of thousands
of members around the world.
Full membership in the IOC means a clear, final acceptance of DanceSport as a legitimate sport, but it is just the beginning of our Olympic hopes, because acceptance as a Recognised Sport does not mean that DanceSport competitors may now automatically compete in the Olympic Games. To gain that right, IDSF must satisfy the IOC that DanceSport can fulfil the many rigorous practical requirements for Olympic Medal Program Sports.
OOZE is a Latin dancer's buzzword for decelerating from a brisk move - relax, breath out, ooze slowly. When something is done quickly then suddenly decelerated - OOZE it, seep out smoothly and softly.
OPEN COMPETITION allows competitors, who do not reside in the region or area to enter, i.e. British citizens would be permitted to enter the South African Open Championships (see closed Competition).
OPEN COUNTER PROMENADE POSITION (OPEN CPP) is similar to COUNTER PROMENADE POSITION, but the couple have moved apart so that the man's left hip and the lady's right hip are now slightly apart, with the man holding the woman's right hand in his left hand at about waist level.
OPEN DIVISION: Open category is open to entry by any amateur (who is registered as an 'Amateur Competitor' by a member organisation of the IDSF ) in accordance with these rules.
OPEN
MARKING is when the marks of couples are displayed publicly or visually,
straight after the
dancers have completed their performance,
as is done in Ice-skating.
OPEN TURN is a turn in which the third step passes the second step instead of closing. The lady's counterpart to a man's Open Turn is usually a Heel Turn.
OUTSIDE PARTNER:
This indicates a step taken forward by the lady or man that does not follow
the partner's opposite foot but is taken to the Right of both his (or her)
feet. In such steps, the bodies must keep close contact, the outside movement
being achieved by stepping across the front of the body. The partner's
step would be described as 'Partner Outside,' and must be taken across
the body at the back.
Outside Partner, therefore, does
not mean literally outside your partner, only the knee to the foot is outside
your partner, not the hips or thighs.
All these steps are taken In Contra
Body Movement Position (CBMP). In some advanced variations the outside
step is taken on the left side of the partner. In social dancing outside
partner is called Parallel position,
except that contact is slightly lost during right and left parallel positions.
OUTSIDE TURN: A turn to the right for the lady and left for the man (see inside turn).
OUT-SHINING: (see over-shadowing).
OVER-REACHING: Pertains mainly to the Ballroom (Standard) or the Moving dances when the backward step taken is too large, causing an awkward dipping action as a result.
OVER-SHADOWING is the selfish trait of a male dancer to outshine his partner in a desperate bid to show off or be noticed. His partner becomes the FRAME and he the PICTURE.
