QUALIFYING EVENT is an event
at recognised competition where a semi-final was danced.
QUALITY FIELD: To win a contest against poor competition or inexperience dancers proves little. To come 1st when you are the only contestant proves nothing. To win a contest in quality company, against stiff opposition is a major feat - a true reflection of your genuine worth as a performer. This type of opposition is referred to as "quality field dancing".
QUICK is a term used in timing steps. A quick step always occupies half the time of a slow step and usually equals one beat in the music. A quick is also known as a running step and generally danced on the toe or the ball of the foot for speed.
QUICK: A step or weight change that takes one beat of music.
QUICKSTEP: As the name implies, the Quickstep is a very quick and lively dance - comprising hops, skips and kicks. The dance began as a quick version of Foxtrot mixed with the Charleston with a musical Jazz influence. The beginners watching a dance demonstration or competition always look to the Quickstep as the highlight of the evening.
The audience appeal is contagious and the dancers seem to draw extra reserves of energy from the enthusiasm of the audience. This dance might be termed the 'joy' dance of modern dancing. While the basic figures are quite simple, the tempo of the music and the whole character of the dance seem to invite a care-free interpretation of its bright rhythm.
The beginner will find the basic steps easy to learn and easy to fit to music. The advanced dancer will discover that the music lends itself to an infinite variety of steps; a dance that can never grow stale, a dance that is unquestionably the most attractive expression of rhythm the world has ever known.
