Personal genealogy -- how on earth did "I" get here ?

Me, myself and I, this person named Daniel Charles Thomas, offspring of bourgeois petite gentry, son of Lady Marjorie the scholar/educator and Sir William the merchant marine hero (more here) and rocket engineer, and now stepson of Lord Herbert the photographer and waterpower inventor, this poetastro culterano self I was born on an island in San Francisco Bay, home of my grandmother Nell, she who was a nymph of the Wisconsin & Seattle ocean and who married a wandering sailor from Ontario. At the tender age of one and one half years I was carried away to the Mexican frontier on the south of the golden state, to the town of my other grandmother, Margaret, who was a nymph from the Kansas Oz desert "I don't think we're there any more" who married an army flyer from Iowa. Come Josephine in my flying machine. In this border province my father would build the rockets which lifted John Glenn into orbit. Or, more precisely, he helped keep them from blowing up by discovering with his g.d. brethren the secrets of liquid gas fuel line vibration and the false necessity for the existence of a certain crimping flange, which was removed so that Atlas--the demigod father of Centaur--might promptly stop exploding and Colonel Glenn be safely lifted off into apotheosis from this stormundrang world full of nuclear ICBMs amen.
I never knew my grandfathers, only their wives. These two demigoddess women, one in the North, one in the South, represent the primal poles of my psyche. Ever in my dreams I am engaged in a pilgrimage between their homes. Over the coast highway and through the hills to grandmothers' houses we go. May they both rest in blessed peace with my father and all our ancestors amen.
And so I grew up in provincial La Mesa and San Diego at the end of this earth on the border beside the Pacific, making annual trips north to the golden Bay which is ever my unknown, second home. As a younger adult I have also lived in Washington D.C., Chicago, and Los Angeles. I am currently [1999-2002] living both in San Diego and Tijuana.
