LIA MATERA
After the 80's, Willa Jannson thought things would get better. But she is having a hard time with the 90's. Her parents are still active radicals who'd hoped she'd defend the poor, the indigent, and the oppressed against the State. Her own left-leaning politics keep her from being comfortable as a corporate attorney. And partners at law firms that hire her have an alarming habit of turning up dead. Lia Matera's Willa Jannson books are written in a clever, wry first person narrative. Many writers try for something like Matera's jokey style, but few can match either the tone or substance of these books. Willa is certainly one of my favorite characters.
Where Lawyers Fear To Tread
Matera's Laura Di Palma books are much darker than the Willa Jannson series. Di Palma has tried and won several high profile cases. Her tangled personal relationships have led her to abandon her San Francisco practice for a time. And her willingness to take on unpopular causes and clients has gotten her into trouble with everyone from employers to politicians to the bar association. Not exactly light reading - but if you enjoy good writing and a thoughtful story, you'll like Laura Di Palma.
