Barbara Paul says she initially resisted the idea of writing a detective series. But by the third time Marian Larch appeared in a novel, Paul had to admit she had a series on her hands. The first stories with Larch don't exactly feature Marian Larch as the main character. Not unitl The Apostrophe Thief are the books even told from Larch's point of view. This unusual beginning gave Paul time to develop Larch's character in unexpected ways and to build up an interesting supporting cast.
