Lauren, in the first book in this series, discovers the addictive nature of computer bulletin boards. She's still sending off e-mail and playing on the internet, but Lauren doesn't really use computer databases much in her investigations. Nor does this series have the near obligatory sidekick computer hacker/geek who can pull up classified information on anyone any time. The technology, like the characters, is "regular folks." Scoppettone's writing is breezy and wise-cracking. Lauren has a few annoying vocal mannerism, but by and large, the colloquial style keeps the narrative zipping along.
