President Bush displayed his shady political style on Wednesday by signing a special memorandum barring U.S. foreign aid to family planning groups that are involved in abortions. Bush had originally set a prohibition of federal funds on January 22nd, causing Senate opponents of the measure to attempt an overturn of the decision using the same law Republicans used to dismiss workplace ergonomic rules (see Repealed). The move by Bush on Wednesday effectively bypasses that process, as signing a special memorandum removes the chance for Congress to even vote on the issue. "This guy is a major scumbag," said Ann Noid of the Center for Female Equality. "He comes to Washington preaching how he will change the tone and work with Congress. Then he pulls a little razzle-dazzle move to circumvent the democratic process. This is a dangerous man with a dangerous agenda. This isn't the first time he's lied to the American people, and it certainly won't be the last." Noid further added that the president himself was "as good an argument for abortion as any. If Barbara Bush had hopped up on the table years ago we might not be facing the grave destruction of personal liberty we are looking at for these next four years." ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
