This site is under on-going construction, and new categories will be added as and when I get around to it, and those already listed may be subject to updates and re-arrangement occasionally.

Although MythBase is a sub-section of Shanrar's Hammer, it is designed to function as a separate site in its own right.

What is MythBase?

MythBase is a website created by myself, Mark D. Holt.  It is intended to be an 'A-Z' reference of world mythology, legend, and folklore, working in much the same way as a dictionary.

I started out writing Mythbase using the AMOS Basic programming language on my Amiga 500 back in the mid-90s.  I only managed to get a small amount of the information entered before the project fell by the wayside and left in limbo... until now.  After a few years of being on the internet, I decided it was about time to create my own website.  Soon afterwards Shanrar's Hammer was on line.  'Shanrar's Hammer' is mainly about sharing my short stories, poetry, and artwork with the rest of the world, but with the main theme of the site being fantasy, I decided that it would be an ideal time to utilise all of those mythology notes that had been cluttering up my drawers all these years.  Thus, MythBase was born.

The purpose of MythBase is not to retell the original stories, but rather to describe the characters, places, objects, and events within the stories.  The information for MythBase comes from a number of different sources, including: text books, dictionaries, magazines, and of course, the internet.

One thing you will notice when using MythBase is that some entries have more information than others - some will have only a few words, while others may have several paragraphs.  The reason for this is simple - I had access to more information on certain subjects than I did on others.  As more information becomes available to me, I shall update entries accordingly.

Categories.

Categories are shown on the table below, with main 'cultural' heading on the left, and the corresponding 'national' categories on the right.

Many categories start with a brief history of the people before going on to list the entries.  Each entry starts with the name, followed by other names/spellings for the same entry, then a brief description.

Please note:  All categories are subject to frequent updates and re-arrangement.
