United States. With the pride that comes with nationalism, the government
began to exert its muscles. One of the first documents that had, and still
has, influenced the policy of the United States, was the Monroe Doctrine.
Read an excerpt from the Monroe Doctrine on page 327 of your book, Call
to Freedom. This idea was based on the theory that the United States,
as the most powerful nation in the Western Hemisphere, possessed a 'manifest
right' to regulate the destinies of the turbulent southern republics. |
