10th August 2002 From:
Campsite on a Hill As it turned out, as soon as we reached the car park and had dropped our packs, Bruce from the Hiker's Paradise Hostel came along in his Honda SUV and took us into Gorham; he dropped 'Blaze' at the Royalty Inn, then took me down to the hostel. I picked up my new boots and a package of orange brownies from Katy (Ms. Relic). After nearly two gruelling weeks hiking the Whites, I decided I needed to stay in one of the better motels, so I went back to the Royalty Inn and checked in….hang the expense. The next 90 of so miles are said to be as tough as any on the AT, so two rest days with lots of good food is just what I need right now. I went to the post office and got my bounce box and extracted some items of clothing and the AT maps for Maine. I then readdressed it and sent it forward to Millinocket, Maine, which will be my last stop before heading home. I got the film in my one-time camera processed and mailed it home. I went down to Mr. Pizza for a quick pizza lunch, then decided it was time to reward myself for completing the Whites, so off to the convenience store to buy a pint of Ben and Jerry's. This time I bought Mint Chocolate Cookie - peppermint flavored vanilla ice cream sprinkled with oxford crème cookies. It was delightful. When I was down at the Hiker's Paradise I discovered that 'El Peregrino', the Catholic priest hiking the AT, was there and had decided to leave the trail. I hiked with him for a few days in PA until I got shin splints. Tonight, 'Blaze', 'The Lone Ranger', and myself are meeting for dinner. 'El Peregrino' said he might come along and join us later. That's it from Downunda in Gorham, NH. Goodnight all.
