I got going at 5:45 A.M. this morning, as I wanted to climb Mt. Moosilauke before it got hot. The mountain is 4802 feet high and the climb for me was 3500 feet. It took me a while, but it was not as steep as I thought it might have been. The summit is above the tree line, and for me, it was my lucky day as it was beautiful and clear. The view was uninterrupted for 360 degrees and was overwhelming. I sat there for about half an hour and took it all in.

The climb down was something like I'd not seen or experienced before. It had been raining on this side of the mountain so all the rocks were greasy. It was the most challenging and dangerous descent I have seen on the trail. I'm sure many hikers must have been injured here over the years. Even though I took it very slowly, my feet slid from under me three times; luckily, no damage to me. I can't imagine trying to get down this mountain without the assistance of hiking poles. I eventually got to the shelter area at 6:00 P.M., allowing for breaks throughout the day. This works out to 11 hours to cover 16 miles!

I can't put that effort in every day so I plan to pull my daily mileage back to around 12 miles until I am through the White Mountains. Most of the other Northbounders here are of the same opinion.

The shelter and camping area here is very crowded, the first crowd I have experienced in a long time. Most, life myself, are tenting out. Those I know here: 'Lotto', 'Blaze', 'Potato Man, 'Guern', and 'Donkey'.

Tomorrow I need to get a resupply of food, so I plan to hike eight miles, then jump off the AT, and hitch into North Woodstock. There are a few stores there plus I need to get to a phone to call the doctor at the Hanover Hospital to get the results of my blood test for Lyme disease.

As I was coming through Kinsman Notch today at the NH 2 road crossing, there was a note from the parents of 'Heavy D' informing hikers to call them if they wanted to tent out in their backyard. They were located about five miles away and were offering to pick hikers up. It's an option I might take up from North Woodstock tomorrow.

That's it for now. Goodnight all.
