22nd August 2002 From:
Little Bigelow Lean-to I stopped at East Carry Pond for lunch. There was a small sandy beach where I sat and the view across the pond was delightful, and there was absolute silence. It stared raining after about 1/2 an hour, so I packed up and got moving. I had only six miles to cover to get to the shelter. This would position me 3 1/2 miles from the Kennebec River and Caratunk, across the other side. I will need to catch the canoe ferry, which starts at 9:00 A.M. I passed an important milestone today - 2000 miles! I came to a bitumen road and it had "2000 miles" painted on it in huge letters. It was great to reach that point and I couldn't help wondering how deflated the Southbounder thru-hiker must feel when they see it. The shelter here is packed. A thru-hiker named 'Geek' is here, plus four older ladies out for a short hike, and there are about ten young people from NH camped out. Well, that's it for today. Goodnight all.
